Best Leveling Class in WoW Forever: Every Class Ranked for Solo 1–60
Which class levels fastest in WoW Forever? Hunter and Warlock lead every beta-based list. Compare all nine classes, the best spec and new race options.
EnlargeShort answer: Beast Mastery Hunter or Affliction Warlock. Every beta-based tier list we compared puts at least one of them at the top for solo leveling. Both have a pet that holds the enemy while you deal damage, and both spend little time resting. Frost Mage is the fast but less forgiving alternative. Warrior is the slowest solo class on every list, though it is excellent at 60 and in a group.
This page ranks classes for solo leveling speed. For what changed in each class's toolkit, see our Forever class changes overview.
Scope and checking. Checked November 1, 2026. Forever's beta capped characters at level 20 and later at 30, so every ranking for levels 31–60 is a forecast from ability data, not measured play. We compared five independent beta-based tier lists (sources at the end) with Blizzard's class announcements, and we report where they agree and where they split. Class balance can still change at launch on November 4.
The consensus tier list
Lists use different letters and criteria, so we grouped classes by how consistently they rank rather than copying any one list.
| Tier | Class (leveling spec) | How consistent is the ranking? | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Hunter (Beast Mastery) | Top tier on all five lists | Pet tanks from level 10, ranged damage, very little downtime |
| Top | Warlock (Affliction) | Top or second tier on all five | Voidwalker tank from 10, damage over time on the move, Fear, Life Tap |
| Strong | Mage (Frost) | Top tier on some lists, second tier on most | Fast kills, control, conjured food and water. Fragile with no pet. |
| Strong | Paladin (Retribution) | Mid to strong | Plate armor, self-heals, steady. Kills slowly and needs to drink. |
| Mid | Druid (Feral) | Wide spread, from second tier to low | Slow until forms arrive, then very sustainable. One list rates Bear highly. |
| Mid | Shaman (Enhancement) | Mid | Mail and a shield, self-heals, Ghost Wolf from 20. Mana is tight early. |
| Mid | Rogue (Combat) | Mid | Good damage, stealth to skip fights, no self-heal |
| Lower | Priest (Shadow) | Low to mid | Safe with Power Word: Shield, slow until its Shadow tools arrive |
| Slowest | Warrior (Protection from 16 is the smoother route) | Last or near last on every list | Rage-starved early, no self-heal before Victory Rush at 20, gear-dependent |
How to read this: the gap between "Top" and "Mid" is real but not huge. A class you enjoy and play well will beat a top-tier class you dislike. Warrior is the one class where every source warns you to expect a slower solo climb.
Why Hunter and Warlock lead
Hunter (Beast Mastery): the safest first character
A Hunter fights without a pet for levels 1–9, then gets one at 10. From then on, the pet takes the hits while you shoot. The benefits compound: you take less damage, rest less and pull the next mob sooner. New to the game altogether? Start with our beginner guide. WoW Forever DB rates Beast Mastery S tier, noting:
- Aimed Shot and Disengage at 20, available to every Hunter in Forever rather than only one talent path. WowCamp also notes that all Hunters get Aimed Shot at 20.
- Mend Pet at 12 and Feign Death at 30 for survival.
- Aspect of the Cheetah at 20 for travel before your mount.
The costs are ammunition, pet food, a quiver and the need to keep a decent ranged weapon. Hunters also have a dead zone close in, where ranged shots can't be used. Icy Veins notes that Forever lets Hunters specialize in melee (Survival), but no list we checked recommends Survival for leveling. Forever also adds Human Hunter as a new combination. See our Hunter changes guide for the full list.
Warlock (Affliction): the lowest downtime once it gets going
Warlocks have the hardest early levels. Several testers and WoW Forever DB call levels 6–10 the painful stretch: the Imp, a wand and frequent drinking. At 10 the Voidwalker arrives, and the class changes. You put your damage-over-time spells on one enemy while the Voidwalker holds it, move on to the next, and use Life Tap to turn health into mana instead of sitting to drink. Fear is your reset button for bad pulls. Drain Life and Healthstones keep you alive.
The weak spot is movement. Warlocks have no speed ability before the Felsteed at 40, which still comes from a class quest. Forever adds Troll Warlock, and Wowhead reports that Blizzard's racial tuning pass restored the Orc racial Command as a 5% bonus to Warlock and Hunter pet damage. That makes Orc a natural pick for either class. Details are in our Warlock changes guide.
Every class for leveling, in detail
Mage (Frost): fastest kills, least forgiving
Mages kill quickly, conjure their own food and water so they never pay for drinks, and have strong crowd control in Frost Nova and Polymorph. WoW Forever DB calls Frost "the safest Mage," with slows and freezes that keep enemies away. It also notes that Frost stops often to drink and has no speed ability. Two lists put Mage at the very top for kill speed. All of them warn that a cloth caster with no pet dies quickly when a pull goes wrong. Forever adds Orc Mage for the Horde. See our Forever Mage guide.
Paladin (Retribution): hard to kill, slower to kill
Paladins are steady. Plate armor, self-heals and a simple rotation mean you rarely die. Consecration is trained baseline at 20 in Forever, and WoW Forever DB highlights Seal of Command at 20 for Retribution's two-handed damage. The trade-off is pace: no ranged pull, limited mobility and regular drinking. Forever adds the Undead Paladin, the first Horde Paladin, with its own "Redemption" quest chain (RestedXP added it to its Horde route). Both Paladin and Warlock still earn their level 40 mounts through class quests. See our Paladin changes guide. If you want to tank while leveling, see our Prot Paladin guide.
Druid (Feral): the hardest class to call
Sources disagree most about Druid. Before level 10 you have little beyond Wrath. Bear Form arrives at 10 (RestedXP's route includes the Bear Form quest for Night Elves and Skyborne), and Cat Form at 20 is when solo damage picks up. WoW Forever DB rates Feral Bear in its A tier for a Druid that "rarely drinks and shrugs off damage." Other lists rank Feral lower because early kills are slow and shapeshifting costs mana. Forever adds Skyborne Druids, with race-specific forms. See our Druid changes guide.
Shaman (Enhancement): solid and self-sufficient
Shamans have mail armor and a shield, Healing Wave from level 1 and totems. One list notes that Ghost Wolf becomes an instant cast from 20, which helps with travel. The common complaint is mana before about level 25–30. Shaman is no longer Horde-only: Forever adds Dwarf Shaman for the Alliance, and Windshaper Skyborne can be Shamans on the Horde side.
Rogue (Combat): good damage, no safety net
Rogues kill quickly and can use stealth to skip fights they don't need. Without self-healing, they spend a lot of time eating, and a bad pull is hard to escape after Vanish and Sprint are used. WoW Forever DB names Combat the default leveling spec, with Blade Flurry at 30. WowCamp reports that testers felt enemies detected Rogues sooner than in Classic. That is unconfirmed by Blizzard.
Priest (Shadow): safe, slow start
Power Word: Shield and self-heals make the Priest hard to kill. Its damage, though, is low until its Shadow tools arrive. WoW Forever DB names Mind Flay at 22 and Vampiric Embrace at 27 as the turning points. Priests are much stronger in a duo or dungeon group, where everyone wants one. Forever adds Gnome Priest.
Warrior: last for solo, first for groups
Every list we compared puts Warrior at or near the bottom for solo leveling. Warriors run short of Rage early, have no self-heal until Victory Rush at 20, and depend heavily on weapon upgrades, so food and bandages become a real cost. At 60, Warriors are a top tank and a strong damage dealer. With a healer partner, the leveling problem mostly disappears. If you level a Warrior, our dungeon guide and the dungeon table in the leveling hub matter more to you than to anyone else.
Classes by faction and race in Forever
Forever adds six race/class combinations and the Skyborne race, so faction no longer locks you out of Paladin or Shaman.
| Class | Alliance races | Horde races |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, High Order Skyborne | Orc, Undead, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne |
| Hunter | Dwarf, Night Elf, Human (new), High Order Skyborne | Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne |
| Warlock | Human, Gnome | Orc, Undead, Troll (new) |
| Mage | Human, Gnome, High Order Skyborne (Alliance only) | Undead, Troll, Orc (new) |
| Paladin | Human, Dwarf | Undead (new) |
| Shaman | Dwarf (new) | Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne (Horde only) |
| Druid | Night Elf, High Order Skyborne | Tauren, Windshaper Skyborne |
| Rogue | Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, High Order Skyborne | Orc, Undead, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne |
| Priest | Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome (new) | Undead, Troll |
Skyborne can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues or Druids on either faction, plus Shaman (Horde) or Mage (Alliance). The Skyborne race requires the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition. See our Skyborne leveling guide.
Do racials matter for leveling? A little. Every race in Forever now has two active and two passive racials, which Blizzard tuned to a similar amount of power. Skyborne get 2% Haste from Wind Blessed. For most players, faction (where your friends are) matters far more than racial bonuses. Our races and racials guide lists every racial after the November 2 changes and our pick of race for each class.
Leveling guides for each class
Each of these guides covers the spec, talents, rotation, professions, camp buffs and Legacy perks for one class: Hunter, Warlock, Mage, Warrior, Paladin, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Druid.
Which class should you pick?
| If you want… | Pick | Because |
|---|---|---|
| The easiest first character | Hunter | Pet tanks, ranged, forgiving mistakes |
| The lowest downtime after level 10 | Warlock | DoTs, Voidwalker, Life Tap |
| The fastest kills and you play carefully | Frost Mage | Control and burst; dangerous if a pull goes wrong |
| To almost never die | Paladin or Feral (Bear) Druid | Plate or bear armor, self-heals |
| Group dungeons while leveling | Priest, Paladin, Druid or Shaman | Healers find groups instantly |
| A max-level tank or melee main | Warrior, ideally with a partner | Slow solo, elite at 60 |

Tips that matter more than your class
- Don't judge any class before level 10. Pets, the Voidwalker, Bear Form and talents (from level 10) all arrive around there.
- Use a route. Downtime and travel decide leveling speed more than class damage does. Our fastest way to level guide covers rested XP, travel and dungeons.
- Your first character speeds up your alts. Reaching 25, 45 and 60 on each class earns account-wide Legacy Points, and the Well Rested perk boosts rested XP for alts. The Talented perk then makes an alt's talent points start earlier, as early as level 5 at full rank, which matters most for classes that feel weak before 10 (Warcraft Tavern, beta data). See Legacy and leveling.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best leveling class in WoW Forever?
Beast Mastery Hunter and Affliction Warlock top every beta-based tier list we compared. Both have a pet that tanks while they deal damage, so they rest very little. The beta only reached level 30, so rankings above 30 are forecasts.
What is the best DPS class for leveling in WoW Forever?
Every class levels in a damage spec, so the solo tier list is the DPS list: Beast Mastery Hunter and Affliction Warlock first, then Frost Mage and Retribution Paladin. For dungeon groups, damage matters less than having a tank and a healer, so pick the damage dealer you enjoy.
What is the easiest class to level in WoW Forever for beginners?
Hunter. Its pet takes the hits from level 10 while you attack from range, which makes mistakes much less costly than on any melee class.
Is Warrior bad for leveling in WoW Forever?
Warrior is the slowest solo leveler on every list we checked, because it runs short of Rage early, has no self-heal until Victory Rush at 20 and depends on weapon upgrades. It is excellent at level 60 and much faster with a healer partner. Solo, Protection from level 16 (Shield Block plus Revenge) is the smoother route; see our Warrior guide.
Is Mage good for leveling in WoW Forever?
Yes. Frost Mage kills quickly, conjures free food and water, and controls enemies with slows and freezes. It is less forgiving than Hunter or Warlock because it has no pet to tank and dies quickly if a pull goes wrong.
What are the new race and class combinations in WoW Forever?
Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. The new Skyborne race can be Warrior, Hunter, Rogue or Druid, plus Shaman on the Horde or Mage on the Alliance.
Are WoW Forever tier lists reliable?
Treat them as a guide, not a verdict. The beta capped characters at level 30, so everything above that is projected from ability data, and Blizzard can still adjust balance after the November 4 launch.
