Fastest Way to Level in WoW Forever: 10 Proven Ways to Save Hours
Level faster in WoW Forever: where the XP really is, rested XP and new XP buffs, travel shortcuts, dungeon and group tips, and mistakes that cost hours.
EnlargeThe fastest way to level in WoW Forever is to quest along an efficient route while cutting down on resting, travel and deaths. Bank rested XP every time you log out, use Forever's new XP buffs, and add dungeons only when you carry their quests. The XP needed to reach 60 is the same as in Classic, so speed comes from how you play, not a shorter curve.
This page is about getting more XP per hour. For the zone-by-zone 1–60 plan, see our WoW Forever leveling guide; for the route addon itself, read our RestedXP Forever review.
Scope and checking. Checked November 1, 2026. XP rules come from Blizzard and Warcraft Tavern's Forever experience guide. Some XP bonuses (Well Fed, the Camp Tent and the Cozy Sleeping Bag) are known from the beta and fan testing rather than a Blizzard announcement, and we flag them where they appear. The beta stopped at level 30, so nobody has tested a Forever route past 30 yet.
Where your leveling time really goes
Leveling time is mostly not combat. On a typical Classic-style journey, it splits across five things:
| Time sink | What it looks like | How to cut it |
|---|---|---|
| Killing | The fight itself. Blizzard targets 10–15 seconds per ordinary creature solo. | Class choice, gear, keeping spell ranks up to date |
| Downtime | Eating, drinking, bandaging, waiting for a pet | Low-downtime class, food buffs, pulling smarter |
| Travel | Running between hubs, flights, boats | Route planning, hearthstone timing, flight paths, mount at 40 |
| Decisions | Reading quests, checking maps, alt-tabbing | A route addon, or planning ahead |
| Deaths | Corpse runs, repairs, lost buffs | Pull control, out-leveling dangerous quests |
Most of the advice below cuts downtime, travel, decisions or deaths. Those four add up to more lost time than slow kills.
The XP curve: why the late game matters most
Blizzard confirmed the XP required per level is unchanged from Classic. Wowhead retracted an early report that it had been cut. Warcraft Tavern's table puts the total at 4,084,700 XP to reach 60:
| Reach level | Total XP | Share of the 1–60 total |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 27,600 | under 1% |
| 20 | 167,200 | about 4% |
| 30 | 499,000 | about 12% |
| 40 | 1,154,400 | about 28% |
| 50 | 2,306,100 | about 56% |
| 60 | 4,084,700 | 100% |
For every level from 1 to 60, see our full XP table.
Two things follow. First, levels 50–60 alone are about 44% of the total XP, so efficiency in the late game matters far more than a perfect first hour. Second, the public beta only covered the first ~12% of the journey. Be cautious about anyone claiming to know the fastest late-game route before launch.
How many hours is that? Beta players averaged 20.5 hours to level 20 (Blizzard, via Icy Veins), and nobody had timed 1–60 before launch. Our leveling time guide covers the estimates; the tips below are how you land at the low end.
1. Follow a route instead of improvising
Every minute you spend deciding where to go is a minute you are not gaining XP. A good route:
- picks up quests in an order that overlaps their objectives,
- turns them in on the way, not on a separate trip,
- times your hearthstone and flight paths,
- skips quests that cost more time than they give.
Forever adds 1,000+ new quests, and some old ones have changed, so a route made for Classic Era will miss steps. Use one built for Forever, whether that is an addon or your own plan from our leveling hub, which lists a zone order for each faction.
Route tools compared
| Tool | Price | What it does | Forever coverage (checked November 1) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RestedXP | Free addon; Forever guides are paid (10% off through our link) | Ordered, step-by-step route with an on-screen arrow; Speedrun and Dungeon Leveling routes | Forever routes for 1–35 are live; 35–60 arrive after launch (Era routes fill the gap) | Players who want the fastest guided route with no planning |
| Questie | Free | Shows quest givers, objectives and turn-ins on your map, but doesn't choose the order | Forever quest data, tested during the beta | Players who plan their own route and want to see every quest |
| Wowdee | Free (alpha addon) | A 1–60 chapter route for both factions with an arrow, inside the Wowdee addon | Full chapter list to 60; levels above 30 couldn't be tested in the beta | Players who want a free full route and accept an early alpha |
| 4Ever Leveling | Free (CurseForge) | A route window with the current step, quest status and navigation, plus a Dungeon Atlas | Some destinations are labeled as approximate Classic locations | Players who want a free step list and don't mind checking locations |
Our honest take: Questie is the best free quest map, and the free route addons are worth trying first. RestedXP is the most complete and best-tested ordered route for Forever right now, and it works alongside Questie. If you only play a few hours a week, the free tools may be all you need. Read our RestedXP vs Questie comparison for the details.
2. Stack quests and kill on the way
Kill XP and quest XP add up, so the best stretches of a route do both at once:
- Hold several kill and collect quests for the same area before you go there.
- Kill monsters in your path rather than walking around them, as long as they aren't gray. Gray monsters give no XP at all.
- Avoid gray quests. Warcraft Tavern notes that quest XP drops by 10–20% for each level once a quest is more than 5 levels below you.
- Don't chase red quests (5+ levels above you) solo. The deaths cost more than the XP gives.
3. Never log out outside a rested area
Rested XP is the biggest free bonus in the game:
- It builds while you are in an inn or capital city (or using the Cozy Sleeping Bag), including while logged out there.
- It doubles XP from kills until it is used up. It does not affect quest or exploration XP.
- It builds at 5% of your current level's XP per 8 hours, up to a cap of 150% of a level. Warcraft Tavern estimates about 10 days to reach the cap.
The rule is simple: end every session at an inn. If you play every evening, that is a steady 5–10% of a level of doubled kill XP waiting for you each time.
Legacy bonus for alts: the Adventure tree's Well Rested perk increases rested XP gains and raises the cap. Blizzard calls it especially useful for leveling alts. Warcraft Tavern reports 4% per rank from beta data, so check the final value in game.
4. Use Forever's new XP buffs
Forever adds several XP bonuses that Classic never had. How certain each one is varies (our XP buffs guide covers each one and how they stack):
| Bonus | Effect (as reported) | How certain | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crafted food (Well Fed) | +5% kill XP for about 15 minutes; lost on death | Blizzard confirms "a small experience bonus"; the 5% and duration are from beta testing | Blizzard; Warcraft Tavern |
| Cozy Sleeping Bag | Up to 3 stacks of +1% XP; persists through death; counts as a rested area | Quest chain is real (RestedXP routes it); values from beta testing | Warcraft Tavern; RestedXP |
| Camp Tent (Leatherworking camp feature) | Raises your rested XP to 5% of a level (no effect if you already have more); then Boosted Rest blocks another tent for 1 hour | Confirmed by Blizzard; lockout from Wowhead's spell data | Blizzard; Wowhead |
| Campfire buffs | One-hour buffs from up to three profession objects | Confirmed by Blizzard | Blizzard |
Two practical takeaways:
- Use camps. Our camping guide lists every camp feature, its buff and the Boosted Rest lockout.
- Take Cooking. It is a secondary profession, so it doesn't use one of your two primary slots, and it keeps your food buff going. Read our professions guide.
- Do the Cozy Sleeping Bag chain once. It sends you to zones on both continents, so follow a route that fits it in. RestedXP added the chain to its Alliance route in its October 9 update.
5. Cut travel time
Travel is where unplanned leveling loses the most time.
- Hearthstone: set it at the inn of the hub you will return to, not the one you are leaving. Our launch checklist covers first-night habits.
- Flight paths: collect each flight master as you pass. A single detour early can save several long runs later.
- New boats: Forever adds Stormwind Harbor ↔ Auberdine and an Alliance loop from Auberdine to Menethil to Southshore. Neutral players get Steamwheedle Port (Tanaris) ↔ Riverglades alongside Ratchet ↔ Booty Bay. Skyborne leave Zephras Isle by skycutter.
- Class and racial speed: Hunters get Aspect of the Cheetah and Shamans Ghost Wolf. After Blizzard's racial tuning pass, Tauren Plainsrunning gives 2% movement speed per stack up to 60% (not while mounted), and Skyborne Skysight gives 15%, or 30% for an hour after you use it at an elemental convergence.
- Mount at 40: Blizzard confirmed the mount comes with riding training. Beta players reported 100 gold at level 40. Arriving at 40 without the gold costs you a long stretch at walking speed, so start saving early.
6. Run dungeons the efficient way
Forever adds nine new five-player dungeons from 13 to 60, and Blizzard retuned dungeon XP twice during the beta:
- Collect the quests first. Most of a dungeon's XP is in its quests. The October 1 build halved their extra XP ("50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values"), but they still pay more than ordinary quests, so one run with every quest in your log is the efficient way to do it.
- Kills are worth more again. The October 8 build raised XP from dungeon kills by about 20%, and party kill XP now depends on each player's own level, as in Classic Era.
- Don't get boosted. If anyone in the party is far above the enemy's level, nobody gets XP, so being carried by a level 60 is not a shortcut. Group with players near your level.
- One clear with quests beats several without. If you can't get the quests (for example, the attunement for City of Dalaran, which starts in Southshore or Tarren Mill), keep questing.
The dungeon table in our leveling hub lists every dungeon with its level range. Our dungeons guide covers how grouping works. Whether dungeons or questing is faster for you: dungeons vs questing.
7. Group when it helps, solo when it doesn't
Grouping changes the XP math. Warcraft Tavern reports that in a five-player party, each kill's XP is divided by five and multiplied by 1.4. In a duo or full group, the XP you lose per kill is usually made up by killing faster and safely completing elite quests. Grouping doesn't change quest turn-in XP.
- Duo with a friend for elite and kill-heavy quests. Our duo leveling guide covers the group XP rules and good class pairs.
- Group on launch night in crowded starting areas. Grouped players share kill credit, so you don't each need to tag every monster.
- Solo for collect quests, where each player has to loot their own items. Warcraft Tavern says Forever adds some bad-luck protection for quest drops.
8. Cut downtime with your class and supplies
- Pick a low-downtime class if speed matters. Hunters and Warlocks lead every beta-based tier list. See our best leveling class guide.
- AoE as a Mage where the route allows it; our Mage AoE leveling guide covers safe pull sizes.
- Learn First Aid for bandages, which cost no mana.
- Carry food and water at the right level. Vendor drinks are cheap compared with sitting at half mana.
- Keep spell ranks current. An outdated rank of your main spell slows every kill. Visit the trainer when your route passes a city.
- Use your talents. Talents start at 10 in Forever, and the trees have milestones at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points. Spend your points as soon as you get them.
9. Stop dying
A death costs you a corpse run, a repair bill and any buffs that don't persist. To avoid deaths:
- Clear a path before you engage, and pull at the edge of groups.
- Keep an escape ready (Fear, Frost Nova, Feign Death, Vanish, a slow) and use it early.
- Skip elite quests solo unless your class handles them comfortably.
- On PvP rulesets, quest away from contested hubs when you can.
10. Make your first character speed up the rest
Legacy is account-wide. The first time each class reaches 25, 45 and 60, you earn Legacy Points, and each character spends up to 16 at launch. Put alts' early points into Well Rested and, if you gather, Bountiful Harvest for more materials. Once Well Rested is at full rank, Talented starts your talent points one level earlier per rank, as early as level 5 at rank 5 (Warcraft Tavern, beta data). See our Legacy overview.
Mistakes that cost the most time
| Mistake | Better habit |
|---|---|
| Logging out in the open world | Always log out at an inn or in a capital |
| Arriving at 40 without mount gold | Save from the start; target about 100g (reported) |
| Running dungeons without their quests | Collect quests and attunements first |
| Following a Classic Era route unchanged | Use a Forever-specific route |
| Killing gray mobs or doing gray quests | Move to the next zone sooner |
| Skipping trainer visits | Keep your main damage spell's rank current |
| Getting boosted by a level 60 | Group with players near your level |
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to level in WoW Forever?
Quest along an efficient route, kill monsters on the way, log out at an inn to bank rested XP, keep a food buff up and add dungeons only when you carry their quests. Travel, downtime and deaths cost more time than slow kills.
Is WoW Forever's XP curve faster than Classic?
No. Blizzard confirmed the XP required per level is the same as in Classic, and Wowhead retracted an early report that it had been reduced. Reaching 60 takes 4,084,700 XP in total.
How does rested XP work in WoW Forever?
You build rested XP in inns and capital cities, including while logged out. It doubles kill XP until it runs out, builds at 5% of a level per 8 hours and is capped at 150% of a level. The Legacy perk Well Rested increases both the rate and the cap.
Is dungeon leveling fast in WoW Forever?
Only with the dungeon's quests. On October 1 Blizzard halved the extra XP from dungeon quests, then on October 8 raised dungeon kill XP by about 20% and made party XP depend on each player's own level. Run each dungeon once at the right level with its quests in your log, and don't get boosted by much higher-level players.
Does food give XP in WoW Forever?
Blizzard says crafted food can give a small experience bonus. Beta testers report a Well Fed buff of 5% more kill XP for about 15 minutes, lost on death. Check the tooltip at launch.
How much gold do I need for my mount in WoW Forever?
Blizzard confirmed the mount is included when you learn riding but hasn't published the price. Beta players reported 100 gold at level 40, so save at least that much.
