Mage AoE Leveling in WoW Forever: What Still Works After the Nerfs
Mage AoE leveling in WoW Forever: the Cone of Cold and Improved Blizzard nerfs, the Blizzard rank rule, Frost talents, a safe pull and RestedXP's AoE routes.
EnlargeMage AoE leveling still works in WoW Forever, but Blizzard deliberately made it smaller. Cone of Cold lasts less time, the Improved Blizzard slow tops out at 40% instead of Classic's 65%, and the old trick of farming huge kited packs is what those changes were aimed at. What remains is a tighter loop: gather a small pack, Frost Nova, Cone of Cold, Blizzard, repeat. It is faster than single-target questing when the spawns and the route are right, and much more dangerous when they aren't.
This page covers what Blizzard changed, the talents and spell ranks that matter, a pull you can practise, where AoE fits around questing, and RestedXP's dedicated Mage AoE routes. For the normal single-target plan, read our Mage leveling guide.

What Blizzard changed for Mage AoE
| Change | When | What it means for AoE pulls |
|---|---|---|
| Cone of Cold duration shortened | Class deep dive | Less time to kite between casts; you have to finish packs faster |
| Improved Blizzard slow capped at 40% (was 65%) | Class deep dive | Mobs walk out of Blizzard quicker, so big circles are risky |
| Cone of Cold: first 4 targets get an extra 10% slow and 3 extra seconds | 15 October | Small packs stay controllable; very large packs don't |
| Winter's Chill: +20% Cone of Cold damage per stack | 2 November | Cone of Cold hits harder after Frost single-target casts |
| Low-rank penalty removed, except for Blizzard | 2 November | Blizzard ranks learned more than 12 levels below you proc Frostbite, Fingers of Frost and Arcane Concentration less often |
| Ice Barrier: +15% Frost damage for 1 minute, +5% more while it holds | 2 November | A pre-pull Ice Barrier is now a damage cooldown too |
| Precision: 2/4/6% hit with all spells | 2 November | Fewer resisted Frost Novas |
| Frost Blast removed; Ice Lance shares an 8-second cooldown with Fire Blast | 2 November | One fewer button; Ice Lance hits frozen targets for 300% |
Blizzard's stated reason for the Cone of Cold and Improved Blizzard nerfs was gold farmers and boosters kiting huge packs. Warcraft Tavern sums up the result: AoE grinding is "still possible to some degree", but Blizzard set out to make it less effective, "particularly for Mages".
How big a pull is realistic?
Nobody has public, measured numbers for Forever AoE pull sizes past the beta, so treat any figure you see as an estimate. What is certain from Blizzard's changes:
- The first four targets matter most. The October 15 Cone of Cold bonus only applies to four targets, and Blizzard only slows up to 40%. Beyond a small pack, extra mobs are a risk, not a bonus.
- Wowhead's rule of thumb is Blizzard on three or more targets. Below that, single-target Frostbolt and Ice Lance are better.
- Respawns decide everything. Blizzard's November 2 notes adjusted respawn rates for launch: fastest in starting zones, then gradually slower as you level. Fast respawns help AoE but also bring adds into your kite path, and launch crowds take the mobs you planned to pull.
Start small and add one mob at a time. A pull you finish reliably beats a big pull you die in once every ten tries.
Talents for an AoE Mage
AoE Mages play Frost. In the Forever trees (tuned up to the November 2 notes, so check tooltips in game):
- Improved Blizzard: the slow that holds the pack in place. Capped at 40% in Forever.
- Frostbite: a chance to root targets, which gives you breathing room in a pull. Since 2 November, procced roots have diminishing returns.
- Precision: 2/4/6% hit with all spells. A resisted Frost Nova is how AoE pulls go wrong.
- Ice Barrier: absorbs damage and, since 2 November, adds 15% Frost damage for a minute (plus 5% while it holds). Cast it before you pull.
- Winter's Chill: since 2 November, each stack adds 20% to your next Cone of Cold's damage.
- Shatter and Ice Lance: for picking off the last frozen stragglers.
Our Mage leveling guide has the full single-target build. For how talents unlock and when you can respec, see WoW Forever talents and dual spec.
A basic AoE pull
- Pre-pull: full mana, Ice Barrier up, Blizzard's highest rank on your bar.
- Gather a small pack by running through it, ideally with a Frostbolt on the first mob so it arrives slowed.
- Frost Nova when they reach you, then step out of melee range.
- Blizzard on the frozen pack. Improved Blizzard keeps them slowed as the Nova breaks.
- Cone of Cold as they come out, then back away. The first four targets stay slowed longer.
- Repeat Blizzard, then finish survivors with Cone of Cold, Ice Lance on frozen targets or Arcane Explosion.
- Drink, and only pull again when you're full.
If something goes wrong (a resist, an add, a runner), Blink away and Frostbolt the strays. Don't stand in the pack hoping the next Blizzard tick saves you.
Keep your Blizzard rank current
Blizzard's November 2 notes removed the low-rank penalty from talent procs for almost every spell, so a downranked Frostbolt now procs as normal. Blizzard is the exception. A Blizzard rank learned more than 12 levels below your level has a reduced chance to trigger Arcane Concentration, Frostbite and Fingers of Frost. Train every new Blizzard rank and drag it to your bar, because the November 2 notes also stopped new spells from being added to your action bars automatically.
AoE, questing and dungeons
- Questing still pays. Blizzard told the official podcast that beta players took 20.5 hours on average to reach level 20, about the same as in Classic. AoE only beats that if the spawns are free and you don't die. Our leveling time guide explains where the hours go.
- AoE quest objectives are the sweet spot. "Kill 10 of X" quests with dense camps let you do both at once.
- Dungeon cleaves need a group close in level. On 8 October Blizzard raised dungeon kill XP by about 20% and made party XP depend on each player's own level, with no XP if a member is far higher than the enemies. Dungeon quests lost 50% of their extra XP on 1 October.
- Duo with a tank or healer. A Warrior or Paladin who holds the pack makes AoE far safer. See our duo leveling guide.
RestedXP's Mage AoE routes for Forever
RestedXP is the one route addon with dedicated Mage AoE routes for Forever. Its Forever guide list on GitHub loads:
| Route | Faction | Levels |
|---|---|---|
| Elwynn Forest / Dun Morogh Mage AoE, then Loch Modan | Alliance | 1–12 |
| Darkshore, then Redridge Mage AoE | Alliance | 12–21 |
| The Barrens, then Stonetalon/Barrens AoE | Horde | 12–21 |
| ADV AoE Mage (Human start) | Alliance | 1–22 |
The advanced route's intro is blunt: "This is the fastest guide for the fastest class in the game (Alliance Mage)… there will be a lot of niche mechanics used as well as highly difficult AoE pulls." The regular routes warn that AoE "is typically a lot harder than single target mage, but a LOT faster". Some step notes in these files still refer to earlier Classic seasons, so expect RestedXP to revise them as launch data comes in. The rest of the 1–60 route is the normal RestedXP Forever route for your faction.
Before you buy: RestedXP has no coupon code to hunt for, because our RestedXP discount link takes 10% off automatically. Levels 1–20 are free (what's free in RestedXP), and our RestedXP review covers what the paid routes do well and where they fall short. For prices and packages, see RestedXP for WoW Forever.
Common Mage AoE mistakes in Forever
- Pulling Classic-sized packs. Shorter Cone of Cold and a 40% slow were designed to punish exactly that.
- An old Blizzard rank. It's the one spell that still procs less when downranked.
- Skipping hit. Precision is cheap insurance against a resisted Frost Nova.
- AoE where spawns are contested. At launch, a crowded camp turns a planned pull into a few scattered tags. Quest instead and come back later.
- No escape plan. Keep Blink and a free path behind you before every pull.
Frequently asked questions
Can you still AoE level a Mage in WoW Forever?
Yes, but on a smaller scale than in Classic. Blizzard shortened Cone of Cold and capped Improved Blizzard's slow at 40% (was 65%) to stop mass-kiting, so huge pulls are much riskier. Small packs that you can freeze, cone and finish with Blizzard still work, and RestedXP ships Mage AoE routes for Forever.
What did Blizzard change about Mage AoE in Forever?
The class deep dive shortened Cone of Cold and lowered the Improved Blizzard slow to 40%. On October 15 Cone of Cold gained an extra 10% slow and 3 seconds on its first four targets. The November 2 notes made Winter's Chill add 20% Cone of Cold damage per stack and kept a reduced proc chance for Blizzard ranks learned more than 12 levels below you.
Do low-rank spells still matter for Mage AoE?
Only for Blizzard. Blizzard's November 2 notes removed the low-rank penalty from talent procs for every spell except Blizzard, which still procs Arcane Concentration, Frostbite and Fingers of Frost less often if the rank was learned more than 12 levels below your level. Keep Blizzard's top rank trained.
Does RestedXP have a Mage AoE guide for WoW Forever?
Yes. RestedXP's Forever guide list on GitHub loads Mage AoE routes for both factions up to about level 21, plus an advanced Alliance AoE route for levels 1–22 that the guide itself calls the fastest guide for the fastest class. Expect revisions after launch, as pull sizes depend on live respawns and crowding.
What spec should an AoE Mage use while leveling?
Frost. Improved Blizzard, Frostbite, Winter's Chill and Ice Barrier all sit in the Frost tree, and Frost Nova plus Cone of Cold give you the control that AoE pulls need. Take Precision for spell hit, since a resisted Frost Nova ruins a pull.
