Protection is the best way to level a Warrior in WoW Forever from level 16. That's when you learn Shield Block. With Shield Specialization, blocking gives you rage, so Shield Block pays for itself, and Revenge, which in Forever gets most of its damage from attack power rather than your weapon, becomes the attack you press on cooldown. Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide says Prot "matches (if not outscales)" a two-hander from that point while taking far less damage. It's still a Warrior: slower solo than a Hunter or Warlock, and the honest caveat is below.

This page covers why Prot works in Forever, when to switch, talents, a solo rotation, safe pull sizes, gear and Dual Spec. For the full class plan, see our Warrior leveling guide.

Sources: Wowhead's level 30 Protection Warrior guide and Arms Warrior leveling guide, the Blizzard forum thread "Try prot! (from level 16)", Blizzard's Priest and Warrior class deep dive, November 2 development notes and Wowhead's October 30 class tuning report. Checked 4 November 2026. The beta stopped at level 30, so Prot past 30 is untested.

Why Prot works for leveling in Forever

  • Revenge scales with attack power. Wowhead's October 30 tuning report says it scales with 25% of attack power, so most of its damage doesn't depend on your weapon.
  • Shield Block pays for itself. With Shield Specialization, blocks give rage. Wowhead calls it the reason Prot doesn't feel rage-starved, and Shield Block is your most reliable Revenge trigger.
  • Rage from damage taken ignores armor. Blizzard calculates it as if you had no armor, so a well-armored Prot Warrior still gets rage.
  • Thunder Clap works in Defensive Stance, scales with attack power and has a 6-second cooldown, which makes small packs viable.
  • Victory Rush at 20 heals 10% of your maximum health after kills.
  • Defensive Stance threat rose from 30% to 80% and Defiance adds up to 20% more since 2 November, after Blizzard removed Blessing of Salvation. That matters in groups, less so solo.

The honest caveat

A Blizzard forum feedback thread argues that positive Prot reports were inflated by end-of-beta gear and Legacy points, and that Warrior still levels much slower than a Hunter at similar gear. We agree with the middle ground: Protection is the better way to level a Warrior, not a way to make Warrior a top solo leveler. If speed is all you want, see our best leveling class ranking.

When to switch: Arms to 16, then Prot

Talents start at level 10 and are changed at your class trainer in a major city. Our talents and dual spec guide explains respec costs.

Protection talents for leveling

From Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide and the forum thread, in order:

  1. Shield Specialization: blocks generate rage.
  2. Improved Revenge: +60% Revenge damage at 3/3.
  3. Master of Defense and Improved Thunder Clap: more rage and better multi-target damage.
  4. Defiance: 7/13/20% more threat since 2 November. Take it if you group; it's optional solo.
  5. Vanguard: Charge in Defensive Stance.
  6. Improved Rend for tab-Rending packs, or Cruelty (Wowhead lists both as options).

Check every tooltip in game. Blizzard tuned Warrior talents up to the November 2 notes.

Solo rotation

  1. Charge (from Battle Stance; with Vanguard from 25, stay in Defensive Stance).
  2. Bloodrage if you're short on rage.
  3. Shield Block, then Revenge whenever it lights up.
  4. Rend on mobs that live long enough; Thunder Clap and Demoralizing Shout on two or more.
  5. Heroic Strike or Cleave only with spare rage.
  6. Victory Rush after each kill.
  7. Retaliation (15-minute cooldown in Forever) if a pull goes wrong.

How many mobs to pull

Wowhead says Prot gets very strong at cleaving packs after 20. Testers in the forum thread are more careful: four same-level mobs in green gear without Legacy perks can kill you. Start with two or three and add more only as your gear, Thunder Clap rank and talents improve. Keep Shield Wall and Retaliation (both 15-minute cooldowns, separate from Recklessness in Forever) for emergencies.

Gear for a leveling Prot Warrior

  • Shield and armor first. Revenge and Thunder Clap don't use weapon damage, so a good shield and armor matter more than a rare one-hander.
  • Keep a two-hander in your bags for Arms before 16 and as a backup.
  • Strength and Stamina are the easy upgrades; attack power feeds Revenge, Rend and Thunder Clap.
  • Mining and Blacksmithing are Wowhead's profession pick for Warriors. See our professions guide.
  • Race: Dwarf (Artisan's Precision, Stoneform) on the Alliance side, Tauren (extra Strength since 2 November, War Stomp) or Orc on the Horde side. See races and racials.

Prot in dungeons and with a partner

Prot is the spec groups want. Dungeon kill XP rose about 20% on 8 October, and a tanking Warrior with a healer is one of the safest duos. See our duo leveling guide and dungeons guide. In groups, Wowhead's commenters note that Demoralizing Shout and Sunder Armor threat were fixed, so press both. Comparing tanks? See our Prot Paladin leveling guide and our best tank comparison, which covers the November 2 threat buffs for all three tanks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Protection good for leveling a Warrior in WoW Forever?

Yes, from level 16. Shield Block arrives at 16, Shield Specialization makes it pay for itself in rage, and Revenge, which scales with attack power rather than weapon damage, becomes your main attack. Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide says Prot matches, if not outscales, a two-hander once you have Revenge, while taking far less damage.

When should a Warrior switch to Protection?

At level 16, when you learn Shield Block. Before that, level as Arms with a two-hander, then reset your talents at your class trainer and switch to a one-hander and shield.

Does Prot Warrior level faster than a Hunter in WoW Forever?

No. Prot is the better way to level a Warrior, but Warrior is still one of the slowest classes to level solo. A Blizzard forum feedback thread argues that positive Prot reports were helped by end-of-beta gear and Legacy points.

What talents does a leveling Prot Warrior need?

Shield Specialization first, then Improved Revenge, Master of Defense and Improved Thunder Clap. Defiance adds threat for groups, and Vanguard from about level 25 lets you Charge in Defensive Stance. Check tooltips in game, because Blizzard tuned Warrior talents up to the November 2 notes.

Can I keep Arms and Prot at the same time?

From level 40, with Dual Specialization. Blizzard says it is learned at level 40 for a cost; the price hasn't been announced. Before 40, switching means a respec at your class trainer, and Blizzard said respec prices climb quickly at launch.
