Protection Paladin is a real leveling option in WoW Forever if you group, and a safe but slow one if you don't. Forever gives Paladins a tanking seal (Seal of Fury) and Righteous Fury at level 10, Consecration for everyone at 20 and a reworked Protection tree. You can stand in a pack, block, heal yourself and keep going. What you give up is kill speed: most of your damage is flat Holy damage, so solo players still level faster as Retribution.

Status: Protection leveling is largely untested at scale. The trees changed on 2 November, two days before launch; pre-launch guides call Prot leveling "mostly untested theory". We'll update this page with launch-week experience.

Is Prot Paladin good for leveling?

You level...Prot Paladin?Why
Solo, questingPossible, but slower than RetLow damage per kill; very safe, though
Through dungeonsYesTanks find groups fast and Prot is built for it
With a damage-dealing partnerYesYou hold the pack, your partner kills it
With a healer partnerYesThe classic tank-and-heal duo

If you mainly quest alone, read our Paladin leveling guide: it recommends Retribution and explains why. Come back here when you want to tank, or plan Protection as your second spec with Dual Spec at 40.

What Forever changed for Protection Paladins

From Blizzard's Paladin class deep dive and the beta development notes:

  • Seal of Fury at level 10. A new tanking seal. Each melee swing deals bonus Holy damage, which is "constant per swing", so Blizzard says it "favors using a fast weapon while tanking". You gain an absorb shield worth 50% of that damage. Its Judgement deals Holy damage and taunts from 10 yards, where a Druid's Growl and a Warrior's Taunt reach only 5.
  • Righteous Fury at level 10 (was 16), since the 2 November notes. It adds 33% threat to everything plus 90% extra threat from Holy damage. Blizzard says the change mirrors "the level that other Tanks gain access to their tanking stance".
  • Consecration for every Paladin at 20. It deals moderate damage to the first four enemies to enter it and very low damage to the rest. Blizzard did this on purpose to keep Paladins "at parity with Warriors' Thunderclap".
  • Holy Strike at 6. An instant Holy attack between swings; with the Shieldsworn talent it later strikes with your shield.
  • Judgement no longer consumes your Seal, so you set Seal of Fury once and keep it up.
  • Lay on Hands every 20 minutes, down from an hour.

Two beta changes are worth knowing: Blizzard stopped Seal of Fury's mana returns from generating threat, because Paladins "restoring enough Mana to sustain combat while tanking was causing more threat to be generated than intended" (8 October notes), and it removed the Improved Seal of Fury talent on 2 November. The same 2 November notes also removed Salvation, Mass Salvation and Revoke. Your damage dealers no longer get a threat-reduction blessing, so in groups your own threat has to carry the pull. Those notes also made Templar's Bulwark a Magic effect that enemies can dispel, added Stoicism (stun and charm durations 10/20% shorter) to row 5, and fixed Righteous Fury so the Legacy talent The Quick and the Dead properly makes it free.

Protection talents after the 2 November changes

Talents start at level 10. The 2 November notes reshuffled the tree: Divine Intellect and Sacred Duty moved up, Templar's Bulwark moved to row 3, Holy Shield to row 5, and the new Shieldsworn went into row 7. Talents to know for leveling:

TalentWhat it does (from Blizzard's notes and Wowhead's tooltips)
RedoubtA chance to gain more block when you're hit; now up to 20% block
Sacred DutyShorter cooldowns on Divine Shield, Divine Protection and Templar's Bulwark, and a shorter Forbearance
Templar's BulwarkAn absorb equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 seconds; triggers Forbearance (Wowhead)
Shield SpecializationUp to 30% more block value and a chance to restore 4% of your maximum mana on a block
Improved Righteous Fury3/6/9% less damage taken (was 2/4/6%)
Swift JudgementA second Judgement on its own cooldown, so a second taunt
Holy ShieldMore block and Holy damage on each block (30% block chance since 1 October)
ReckoningExtra attacks after you're hit, stored as up to 4 charges for your next swing
Iron CreedMore Holy Strike threat and up to 6% damage reduction for 6 seconds
ShieldswornHoly Strike's cooldown 4 seconds shorter; Holy Strike strikes with your shield and triggers Holy Shield and Shield Specialization

A leveling order to start from. WoW Forever DB's Protection leveling page suggests Redoubt 5/5 by 14, Precision and Sacred Duty, Templar's Bulwark at 20, Shield Specialization, Swift Judgement and Improved Righteous Fury in the 20s, Holy Shield at 30 and Shieldsworn at 40. It labels the order past 30 "unconfirmed" and the spec's leveling as untested, so check each point against the tree in game before you commit.

How to fight as a leveling Prot Paladin

Before the pull: Righteous Fury, Blessing of Kings (or Might while you're weak), Devotion Aura and Seal of Fury. Keep a shield on; without one, Seal of Fury gives no absorb.

Single target (1–20): auto-attack, Holy Strike and Judgement on cooldown. Before 20 you have no AoE, so stay on one or two mobs. Judge Seal of Fury on purpose: it taunts, which is wasted on a solo target that's already on you. WoW Forever DB suggests Seal of Righteousness for damage until you're actually tanking.

Packs (20+):

  1. Pull about four mobs; Consecration only hits the first four properly.
  2. Stand still, let them gather and drop Consecration.
  3. Holy Strike and Judgement on cooldown; from 30, Holy Shield as you run in.
  4. Watch your mana. Let the last mobs die to your auto-attacks and Holy Strike rather than recasting Consecration.

Between pulls: heal yourself with Holy Light or Flash of Light and drink only when mana is low. Healing is the Paladin's downtime saver.

When it goes wrong: Templar's Bulwark, Divine Protection, Hammer of Justice on a caster and Lay on Hands. You have no interrupt, so stun dangerous casters with Hammer of Justice.

Gear and weapons

  • A shield, always. It powers Seal of Fury's absorb, Redoubt, Holy Shield and Shield Specialization.
  • A fast one-hander. Seal of Fury's damage is the same per swing, so more swings means more damage, threat and absorb (Blizzard's deep dive).
  • Stats. WoW Forever DB puts spell power first for Prot leveling, because Seal of Fury, Holy Strike and Consecration scale with it, then hit, Stamina and the defensive stats. Treat it as a starting point; launch gear will show what works.

Prot in dungeons and duos

Tanks rarely wait long for a group, which suits a dungeon-heavy route. Read dungeons vs questing for how Blizzard tuned dungeon XP, our dungeon quests guide for what to pick up before each run, and our duo leveling guide if you're pairing with a friend. A Prot Paladin with a healer or a ranged damage dealer is one of the steadier duos: you hold four mobs and your partner kills them.

A route keeps a slow spec moving

The slower your kills, the more travel and planning time matter. RestedXP's Forever routes keep the questing order tight, include group quests if you turn them on, and have a Dungeon Leveling Guide that fits a tank who queues often.

Frequently asked questions

Is Protection Paladin good for leveling in WoW Forever?

For groups, dungeons and duos with a damage dealer, yes: Seal of Fury, Righteous Fury from level 10 and Consecration from 20 make it a real tank. For solo questing it is safe but slower than Retribution, because most of its damage is flat Holy damage. Pre-launch guides call Prot leveling largely untested.

When does Prot Paladin start to work in WoW Forever?

Seal of Fury and Righteous Fury are both learned at level 10 since Blizzard's 2 November notes, and Consecration at 20. Most guides treat 20 as the point where Prot starts to work and 30 (Holy Shield) as where it becomes comfortable.

How many mobs can a Prot Paladin pull in WoW Forever?

Plan on four. Blizzard redesigned Consecration to deal moderate damage to the first four enemies that enter it and very low damage to the rest, to keep Paladins in line with a Warrior's Thunder Clap.

Do I need a shield for Seal of Fury?

Yes, for the absorb. Wowhead's tooltip says each attack grants an absorb shield equal to 50% of the Holy damage dealt while a shield is equipped. Blizzard also says the bonus damage is the same per swing, so a fast one-hander suits it best.

Prot Paladin or Retribution for leveling?

Retribution for solo questing; Protection when you tank dungeons or level with a partner who deals damage. With Dual Spec at level 40 you can have both.

Prot Paladin or Prot Warrior for leveling?

Both are viable group tanks. The Paladin heals itself between pulls and taunts from 10 yards with Judgement; the Warrior has more burst threat and no mana. Pick the class you enjoy; neither has a verified leveling-speed edge yet.
