Level a Warrior as Arms with a two-hander until 16, then switch to Protection with a one-hander and shield. At 16 you learn Shield Block. With Shield Specialization each block gives you rage, so Shield Block pays for itself and Revenge, buffed by Improved Revenge, becomes your main attack. Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide says Prot matches, if not outscales, a two-handed Warrior once it has Revenge, while you take far less damage. Blizzard's November 2 notes also raised Defensive Stance threat and the Defiance talent. The new Victory Rush at level 20 heals you after kills. Warrior is still one of the slowest classes to level solo and depends on gear, so treat Prot as the better Warrior option, not a way to match a Hunter.

This guide covers the Forever Warrior changes that matter for leveling, then spec, talents, rotation, professions, camp buffs and Legacy perks. There's no Warrior-only changes page on our site yet, so the key changes are summarized here.

The beta stopped at level 30.

What Forever changed for leveling Warriors

Blizzard rebuilt the parts of Warrior that made Classic leveling painful:

  • Rage from damage taken ignores armor. Blizzard kept the original formula but calculates rage as if you had no armor, so better armor no longer means less rage.
  • Rage from dealing damage is normalized to your weapon's speed, and Blizzard is re-adding extra rage for critical strikes.
  • Tactical Mastery is baseline at level 14. You keep 10 rage when you change stances. Since Blizzard's November 2 notes, the Arms talent Improved Tactical Mastery has 3 points and adds 5, 10 or 15 rage, up to 25 in total.
  • Victory Rush at level 20. A 30-second-cooldown instant attack that heals you for 10% of your maximum health. It becomes usable for 20 seconds every time you kill a non-trivial enemy.
  • Rend and Thunder Clap scale with attack power. Thunder Clap is also usable in Defensive Stance, with a 6-second cooldown.
  • Shield Wall and Retaliation have 15-minute cooldowns and no longer share one with Recklessness.
  • Revenge scales with 25% of attack power, according to Wowhead's October 30 tuning report. Most of its damage comes from that scaling, not from your weapon.
  • Defensive Stance threat rose from 30% to 80% on November 2, and Defiance now adds 7/13/20% threat. Blizzard gave that reason for the Druid bear threat increase in the same notes; Blessing of Salvation was removed.
  • Slam has a 15-second cooldown (was 18) since November 2.

Blizzard also acknowledged rage generation bugs during the beta and said it was working on them. If rage feels off at launch, check Blizzard's hotfix notes.

Best Warrior leveling spec: Protection from level 16

SpecLeveling verdictWhy
ProtectionBest from 16Shield Block pays for itself with Shield Specialization; Revenge on cooldown; very little damage taken; strong cleave from 20
ArmsBest before 16, fine afterTwo-handed burst and Overpower procs; Wowhead's Arms leveling guide uses it; more downtime
FuryGood laterDual-wield damage is high with good gear; Bloodthirst no longer heals and now requires Death Wish

Why Prot. Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide says that from the moment you have Revenge, Protection is a "very potent" leveling spec, "matching (if not outscaling)" a two-hander, and very strong at cleaving packs once you pass 20. A Blizzard forum thread, "Try prot! (from level 16)", reaches the same conclusion: Shield Block at 16 makes Revenge available almost on cooldown, Revenge costs little rage, and you lose only a few percent of your health per fight. Revenge isn't based on weapon damage, so you don't need a rare weapon either.

The honest caveat. Not everyone agrees. A Blizzard forum feedback thread argues that positive Prot reports were inflated by end-of-beta gear and Legacy points, and that Warrior still levels much slower than Hunters at similar gear. Protection is the better way to level a Warrior; it doesn't make Warrior a top leveling class. If you level with a healer or in dungeons, Prot is also the spec groups want.

Before 16, use a two-hander and Arms: you don't have Shield Block yet, and Revenge alone is unreliable. If you prefer Arms all the way, it still works. Blizzard's Arms tree has two useful talents for it: Bloodthrill (2 points since November 2) gives your main-hand hits on a target with Rend a 10 or 20% chance to activate Overpower, and Weaponmaster combines the old weapon specializations into one talent. Use Dual Spec at level 40 to keep a second spec.

Our Prot Warrior leveling guide goes deeper into when to switch, Protection talents, pull sizes and gear.

Protection talents for leveling

Like every class, Warriors get talents from level 10. Milestone talents unlock at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree. Respec at your class trainer in a major city. If you spent points in Arms before 16, reset them at the trainer when you switch.

The core, from Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide and the forum thread:

  1. Shield Specialization: blocking gives you rage, which makes Shield Block rage-neutral when both blocks are used. Wowhead calls it the reason Prot doesn't feel rage-starved.
  2. Improved Revenge: +60% Revenge damage at 3/3. Revenge was already buffed baseline and scales with attack power.
  3. Master of Defense and Improved Thunder Clap: more rage and better multi-target damage. Wowhead lists them with Shield Specialization as the early talents that matter most.
  4. Defiance: up to 20% more threat since November 2. Helpful in groups; less important solo.
  5. Vanguard (from level 25 per Wowhead): lets you Charge in combat without leaving Defensive Stance.

Wowhead adds Improved Rend for tab-Rending packs, or Cruelty if you prefer. Check each tooltip in game, because Blizzard tuned Warrior talents up to the November 2 notes.

Arms talents (before 16, or if you stay Arms)

Priorities while leveling:

  1. Improved Overpower, now one row earlier in the tree. Pair it with Rend, which scales with attack power in Forever and should go on every mob that lives long enough.
  2. Improved Tactical Mastery if you swap stances a lot: 3 points for 5/10/15 extra rage since November 2. Baseline already keeps 10 rage.
  3. Spearing Strike, the new 16-point milestone: an instant 15-rage attack with a 20-second cooldown. It deals double damage to mounted targets, dragons and giants.
  4. Bloodthrill (2 points, 10/20% Overpower chance) and Weaponmaster on row 5.
  5. Improved Slam, now in Arms and only 2 points. Slam no longer resets your swing timer and has a 15-second cooldown.
  6. Mortal Strike as your main attack once you reach it.

Talents were tuned up to Blizzard's November 2 notes, so check tooltips in game before you commit.

Warrior leveling rotation

Protection from 16 (Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide, simplified for solo play):

  1. Charge in (from Battle Stance until Vanguard at 25, then swap to Defensive Stance).
  2. Bloodrage if you need rage.
  3. Shield Block, then Revenge every time it lights up. Shield Block is your most reliable way to trigger Revenge.
  4. Rend on mobs that live long enough, and Thunder Clap and Demoralizing Shout on packs.
  5. Heroic Strike or Cleave only with spare rage.
  6. Victory Rush after each kill from 20.

A commenter on Wowhead's guide notes that Demoralizing Shout and Sunder Armor threat was fixed after the guide was written, so both are worth pressing in groups. Retaliation is a strong emergency cooldown against several mobs.

Arms before 16, from Wowhead's Arms guide:

  1. Charge in.
  2. Rend.
  3. Overpower whenever it is available.
  4. Mortal Strike on cooldown once you have it.
  5. Thunder Clap and Sunder Armor to fill gaps.
  6. Heroic Strike only when you have more than 40 rage.
  7. Victory Rush after each kill to heal.

Wowhead advises against spending rage on Execute while leveling. Your rage is better spent on the next mob.

Several mobs (Wowhead): Sweeping Strikes, Mortal Strike, Cleave above 45 rage, and Whirlwind. Thunder Clap now hits harder thanks to attack-power scaling, which helps here too.

Gear, weapons and downtime

Wowhead calls Warrior gear-reliant, and your weapon matters most. Practical tips:

  • Prot: shield and armor first. Revenge and Thunder Clap don't use weapon damage, so a good shield and armor matter more than a rare one-hander. Keep a decent two-hander in your bags for Retaliation and for Arms before 16.
  • Arms: upgrade your two-hander whenever you can. Check quest rewards, dungeon drops and the Auction House every few levels.
  • Dungeon quests matter. Wowhead notes that dungeon XP in Forever comes mostly from dungeon quests rather than mobs. Dungeon quests also give some of the best early weapons. Wowhead points out that Rage Fire Chasm's Axe of Orgrimmar reward has been upgraded to blue quality.
  • Group when you can. Wowhead suggests pairing with a healer to cut downtime.
  • Eat XP food. Wowhead says food buffs give 5% more kill XP in Forever. Up to half of your questing XP comes from kills, so a Well Fed buff pays off.

Our dungeon leveling page covers the dungeons in level order, and the RestedXP dungeon guide covers routing them.

Professions for a leveling Warrior

Wowhead recommends Mining and Blacksmithing. Blacksmithing makes weapons and plate upgrades, and Wowhead notes that Smelting now levels from 1 to 300, so mining ore keeps improving your skill. Both professions also have strong camp features for a Warrior. Mining's Lodestone raises melee attack power and Blacksmithing's Sharpening Wheel raises Strength.

Add First Aid. Bandages are your cheapest healing between pulls, and the First Aid Kit camp feature gives Stamina.

Legacy perks. Wowhead's Warrior guide suggests Thrill of Adventure first, which restores health and mana on each kill and directly cuts your downtime. After that, Well Rested, then Talented so you start talents at level 5. You earn Legacy Points at 25, 45 and 60 and from profession milestones.

Common Warrior leveling mistakes

  • Staying Arms out of habit after 16. Try Prot with Shield Block and Revenge before deciding.
  • Overpulling as Prot. Testers on Blizzard's forum warn that four same-level mobs in green gear and without Legacy perks can kill you. Pull two or three.
  • Fighting with an old weapon as Arms. Your two-hander is half your damage.
  • Pulling two mobs without a cooldown. Unless Sweeping Strikes is ready, a double pull often means eating afterwards.
  • Heroic Strike with low rage. Keep it for when you're above 40 rage.
  • Skipping Victory Rush. It is a free 10% heal after kills.
  • Ignoring dungeon quests. In Forever, that is where much of the dungeon XP and weapon upgrades are.

Warrior leveling checklist

  • Arms talents from level 10, Protection from 16 (Shield Specialization, Improved Revenge)
  • Mining and Blacksmithing, plus First Aid and Cooking
  • Tactical Mastery at 14, Victory Rush at 20
  • Upgrade your shield and armor (Prot) or two-hander (Arms) every few levels
  • Do dungeon quests along the way
  • Keep XP food and bandages in your bags
  • Set a second spec at 40

Downtime is your enemy, so cut travel too

Warriors spend more time recovering than other classes. Travel and planning are the time you can still save. RestedXP's Forever routes give you every next pickup and turn-in with an arrow, including dungeon quests in its Dungeon Leveling route. See our RestedXP for WoW Forever page for details.

Before you buy: RestedXP has no coupon code to hunt for, because our RestedXP discount link takes 10% off automatically. Levels 1–20 are free (what's free in RestedXP), and our RestedXP review covers what the paid routes do well and where they fall short.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Warrior leveling spec in WoW Forever?

Protection from level 16, when you learn Shield Block. With the Shield Specialization and Improved Revenge talents, Shield Block pays for itself and Revenge becomes your main attack. Wowhead's level 30 Protection guide says Prot matches, if not outscales, a two-handed Warrior once it has Revenge, and you take far less damage. Before 16, level as Arms with a two-hander. Arms is still a fine choice if you prefer it.

Is Warrior hard to level in WoW Forever?

It is still one of the slowest classes to level solo. Wowhead calls it gear-dependent, and some beta testers argue it trails Hunters and Warlocks even as Protection. Forever helps: rage from taking damage ignores armor, Tactical Mastery is baseline at 14, Victory Rush heals after kills from 20, and Protection with Shield Block and Revenge cuts damage taken from level 16.

When do Warriors get Victory Rush in WoW Forever?

At level 20. It is an instant attack with a 30-second cooldown that heals you for 10% of your maximum health. You can use it for 20 seconds after killing a non-trivial enemy.

What professions should a Warrior take while leveling?

Mining and Blacksmithing, according to Wowhead. Blacksmithing makes weapon and armor upgrades, Smelting now levels from 1 to 300, and both give strong melee camp buffs. Add First Aid for bandages.

Did Bloodthirst change in WoW Forever?

Yes. Blizzard says Bloodthirst no longer heals the Warrior. Instead it raises your movement speed by 10% for 10 seconds. Since the November 2 notes, Bloodthirst also requires the Death Wish talent.

Should a Warrior use Execute while leveling?

Wowhead suggests not spending rage on Execute while leveling. Most mobs die quickly enough that the rage is better saved for your next pull.

Do dungeons give good XP for a Warrior in WoW Forever?

Mostly through their quests. Wowhead notes that dungeon XP now comes mainly from dungeon quests, and those quests often reward strong weapons, such as Rage Fire Chasm's Axe of Orgrimmar, now upgraded to blue.
