Forever lets Hunters place traps during combat, while their location and ranged dead zone still matter. Blizzard describes these constraints in the Hunter deep dive. Plan where you and your pet will fight before sending the pet forward. For a full leveling plan with talents, pets and professions, read our Hunter leveling guide. Scope: beta mechanics checked October 17, 2026, including the October 15 Auto Shot update. This is a control and preparation guide, not a tested 1–60 build.

From Blizzard's Hunter deep dive and the October 15 beta development notes.

Aimed Shot is baseline at 20 and shares its cooldown with Multi-Shot, but not Arcane Shot. Traps appear at your location; ranged attacks stop within eight yards. Pets scale with Hunter gear. Blizzard's Hunter deep dive describes those mechanics.

Put the relevant shots where you can see their availability. Before testing a new sequence, check which shot is ready and where the target stands. Keep your escape space clear of enemies you have not intended to engage.

Account for the current Auto Shot behavior

The October 15 update adds an optional Auto Attack/Auto Shot switching setting. Auto Shot requires half a second standing still and can fire during Aimed Shot casts. Read the current beta notes.

Check the switching setting before assuming a control problem needs a macro or addon. Practice stopping and firing in a quiet area. Keep that behavior in mind when choosing between another movement adjustment and a moment to shoot.

Give your pet clear instructions

Find the commands you use to send the pet and bring it back. Practice both before approaching a crowded quest area. Check the selected behavior when the pet acts differently from your expectation.

For the next encounter, choose where you want the enemy to stay and where you want to stand. Watch the opening exchange before adding more actions. If another enemy joins, identify how it entered the fight before repeating the pull.

When considering a pet change, inspect the abilities actually available to each candidate. A family ranking alone does not explain how you will control the next encounter. Keep pet and equipment changes separate when comparing how a familiar fight feels.

Prepare for a group pull

Ask the group where it wants to fight and which target it intends to engage. Keep the pet-return command easy to reach before following a tank into unfamiliar terrain. If you are unsure about a pull, settle the instruction before sending the pet.

Use our Forever dungeon grouping guide to check that friends can join the same run. For talent structure, see the class overview, then choose a next step you can explain at your current level.
