Warlock Leveling Guide for WoW Forever: Affliction Talents, Rotation and Tips

Level a Warlock as Affliction in WoW Forever. Put your damage-over-time spells on a mob, let your Voidwalker hold it, and drain the rest. Use Life Tap for mana and Drain Life to heal it back. It is the closest thing to a no-downtime caster in Forever, and Warlock shares the top of most beta-based leveling tier lists with Hunter. Wowhead's Forever leveling guide builds around Improved Corruption, Improved Drains, Pandemic and Soul Siphon. It uses the Voidwalker from level 10 and moves to the Felhunter at 30.

What Forever changed for leveling Warlocks

Blizzard's deep dive lists several baseline changes that shape how a Warlock levels:

• Banes are split from Curses. Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are now Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom. You can have only one Bane per Warlock on a target, but your utility Curses are separate, so you no longer give up damage to apply one.
• Life Tap scales with Spirit. Spirit now does something for a Warlock's mana.
• Drain Soul shards. Drain Soul can give a Soul Shard on damage ticks as well as on kills, but Blizzard's November 2 notes significantly reduced the chance per damage tick. Finishing a mob with Drain Soul is the dependable way to get shards.
• Pets scale with you. Demons scale from your stats, so gear upgrades also make your pet stronger. Blizzard's November 2 notes cut pet health from your Stamina to 2 per point (was 7.5), so your Voidwalker is less tanky than during the beta.
• Cheaper training. Blizzard's November 2 notes set 1–60 training at about 206–207 gold for every class, and Warlock training is reduced by the expected cost of pet Grimoires.
• Spellstone now only boosts Shadow damage.
• Firestone and Spellstone are weapon imbues. Blizzard says they stack with weapon oils.

Best Warlock leveling spec: Affliction

Affliction gets the most from Forever's new talents. Blizzard added Pandemic, which raises the critical strike damage of your DoTs and drains. It also added Soul Siphon, which boosts Drain Life and Drain Soul for each of your other Affliction spells on the target, and Wrack as the new 31-point talent, whose damage Blizzard doubled on November 2 (86 damage per second at level 60, up from 36). Demonology has its own new tools, such as Demonic Knowledge and Demonic Pact. Use Demonology if you prefer a stronger pet, but Affliction is the reference leveling build.

Affliction talents: priorities, not a point table

The basics, as Blizzard describes them:

• Talents start at level 10. Milestone talents unlock at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree.
• Respec at your class trainer in a major city. Dual Spec arrives at level 40.

Talents were still being tuned right before launch. Blizzard's November 2 notes confirm that Improved Drains now boosts Drain Mana and no longer boosts Wrack, so read the tooltip before you spend points. Wowhead's leveling guide names these as the core Affliction talents:

• Improved Corruption (5/5), Improved Life Tap and Suppression in the first rows.
• Improved Drains: Blizzard says it increases health drained or damage done by your drains by up to 20%. Since November 2 it boosts Drain Mana and no longer Wrack.
• Improved Bane of Agony (now 2 points instead of 3) and Amplify Curse.
• Pandemic: up to 100% more critical strike damage on Corruption, your Banes, Drain Soul, Drain Life, Siphon Life and Wrack.
• Soul Siphon: your Drain Life and Drain Soul deal up to 12% more for each of your other Affliction spells on the target, to a maximum of 36%.
• Malevolence, Shadow Mastery and Siphon Life to finish the core.

Wowhead also suggests Unholy Power and Demonic Energies from the Demonology tree. Unholy Power gives your pet more damage. Demonic Energies heals your pet for part of your spell damage and gives it mana when you Life Tap.

These are the levels from Wowhead's leveling guide. Pets scale with your stats in Forever, so a gear upgrade helps your demon too. With pet health from Stamina cut on November 2, keep an eye on your Voidwalker's health on bigger pulls.

Warlock leveling rotation

One mob at a time, from Wowhead's guide:

1. Send your pet in.
2. Corruption, Bane of Agony and Immolate (Immolate ranks less often; Wowhead suggests buying rank 1 at level 1 and keeping it on early).
3. Shadow Bolt or wand while the DoTs tick.
4. From level 30, when Drain Life rank 3 is available, use Drain Life as your filler. It heals you while it damages the target.
5. Life Tap when your mana runs low, then Drain Life to recover the health.

Two mobs: put your DoTs on both and Fear one while your pet and drains work on the other. Wowhead calls this fear-juggling two mobs. It works, but check that a feared mob won't run into another group.

Wands: Wowhead recommends the Lesser Magic Wand around level 5 and the Greater Magic Wand around 13. Wanding the last bit of a mob's health saves mana.

Summoning and soul shards

Wowhead's guide warns that Meeting Stones don't summon in Forever. If your group needs a summon, a Warlock's Ritual of Summoning needs three players. Since Blizzard's November 2 notes, Drain Soul rarely gives shards on damage ticks, so finish mobs with it to stock up. Drain a few mobs that are about to die at the end of a quest chain.

Professions for a leveling Warlock

Tailoring and Enchanting are the caster classic. Tailoring makes cloth gear and bags from the cloth you loot anyway, and Enchanting turns unwanted green items into materials for your own gear. Tailoring's camp feature is the Faction Banner (Spirit), and Spirit now improves your Life Tap.

If you'd rather make money, choose two gathering professions. Herbalism also gives you the Incense Candle (Intellect) at camps.

Camp buffs and Legacy perks for Warlocks

The camp features that help a Warlock most:

Each player can add one feature, and buffs last an hour once you have sat at the fire for a minute. Our camping guide has the full list and the stacking rules.

Legacy perks. You earn Legacy Points at levels 25, 45 and 60 and from profession milestones. Wowhead's Warlock guide suggests Thrill of Adventure, which restores health and mana on kills, as a strong early pick. Fewer Life Tap and drink breaks is exactly what a Warlock wants.

Races for a Warlock in Forever

Blizzard added Troll Warlock as a new combination at launch. Undead Warlocks also gain from Forever's racial rework. Blizzard says Cannibalize now restores mana as well as health, and Touch of the Grave gives attacks a chance to drain life from enemies. Neither changes the core leveling plan, so pick the race you want to look at for 60 levels.

Common Warlock leveling mistakes

• Life Tapping without healing it back. Pair every tap with Drain Life or a pet-tanked kill.
• Over-pulling with Fear. A feared mob that runs into a camp brings friends.
• Forgetting the pet is the tank. Let the Voidwalker or Felhunter grab the mob before you stack DoTs.
• Skipping shards. Collect a few soul shards with Drain Soul before each long session.
• Ignoring Spirit. In Forever, Spirit makes Life Tap stronger, so it isn't a wasted stat any more.

Warlock leveling checklist
