Level a Priest as Shadow in WoW Forever. Start with Wand Specialization, which now only needs two points, and kill with a wand early on. From level 20 the Shadow core is Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, Devouring Plague and Mind Flay, then the wand to finish. Forever gives every Priest Devouring Plague and Fear Ward at 20, Divine Spirit at 30 and Shadow Word: Death at 32. Shadowform now cuts the mana cost of Shadow spells by 50%. Wowhead's Forever leveling guide reaches Shadowform at 40. One alternative is to level as Discipline for Meditation and respec at 40.

This guide covers what Forever changed for Priests, then spec, talents, rotation, mana, professions, camp buffs and Legacy perks. There's no separate Priest changes page on our site yet, so the leveling-relevant changes are summarized here.

What Forever changed for leveling Priests

From Blizzard's deep dive:

  • Devouring Plague and Fear Ward are available to all Priests at level 20, whatever your race.
  • Divine Spirit is baseline at level 30. Improved Power Word: Fortitude is baseline as well.
  • Shadow Word: Death is baseline for all Priests at level 32. It deals instant Shadow damage, but you take damage yourself if the target survives. Blizzard's deep dive set that at 10% of your maximum health; Blizzard's November 2 development notes raised the backlash to 30% of your maximum health and removed it when the spell misses, so use it carefully.
  • Holy Binding replaced Binding Heal in Blizzard's November 2 notes: when your Flash Heal heals someone else, 50% of that healing is also done to you. Useful when you heal a dungeon group while leveling.
  • Fade reduces twice as much threat.
  • Shadowform now allows all non-healing spells while you're in it. It also cuts the mana cost of Shadow spells by 50% and doubles their critical strike damage bonus.
  • Each race has two unique Priest spells. Blizzard re-evaluated them all and added new ones for Gnome Priests (see Races below).

Best Priest leveling spec: Shadow

SpecLeveling verdictWhy
ShadowBestDoTs, Mind Flay and Shadowform; Wowhead's leveling pick
DisciplineGood until 40Meditation for better mana; Penance (21 points) deals damage as well as healing
HolyDungeonsStrong healing; slow solo damage

Wowhead's alternative is worth knowing: level as Discipline for Meditation, which Blizzard says now gets a much larger mana benefit from Spirit. Then respec into Shadow at 40, when Shadowform arrives and Dual Spec unlocks. Planning to heal while you level? See leveling as a healer.

Shadow talents for leveling

Talents start at level 10, milestones unlock at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree, and you can respec at a class trainer in a major city.

Wowhead's order while leveling:

  1. Wand Specialization at level 10. Blizzard reduced it to two points for the same benefit.
  2. Mind Flay from 20, Shadow's main channel.
  3. Shadowform at 40.

Shadow talents from Blizzard's deep dive that matter for leveling:

TalentWhat it does in Forever
Shadow FocusNow raises your chance to hit with Shadow spells; moved to row 1
Shadow ReachMoved to row 2; only 2 points
Improved Mind Flay (row 3)More damage and range for Mind Flay, with a weaker slow
Vampiric Embrace (16-point milestone)Now 30 seconds with a 1-minute cooldown
Devouring Contagion (row 5)Cheaper Devouring Plague; when the target dies, the Plague spreads to up to 2 enemies within 5 yards (not from critters)
Early Demise (row 6)More Shadow Word: Death crit chance below 20% health
Shadowform50% cheaper Shadow spells, double crit damage bonus

Trees were tuned until shortly before launch. Read the tooltip in game before you spend a point.

Shadow Priest leveling rotation

From Wowhead's Shadow guide:

  1. Power Word: Shield on yourself if the mob will reach you.
  2. Mind Blast to open.
  3. Shadow Word: Pain.
  4. Devouring Plague from level 20.
  5. Mind Flay while the DoTs tick.
  6. Wand to finish and save mana.

Several mobs: Devouring Plague with Devouring Contagion spreads to up to 2 enemies when the target dies, which makes chain-pulling efficient. Use Psychic Scream to break off a mob that's too close.

Mind the five-second rule. Wowhead reminds you that mana regeneration from Spirit pauses for five seconds after you spend mana. Ending each fight with your wand lets regeneration restart sooner.

Level-by-level milestones

Races for a Priest in Forever

Blizzard's deep dive lists two race-specific Priest spells for each race. These are the new or changed ones that matter for leveling:

RaceSpellWhat it does
Gnome (new)Confounding Flash (10)Confuses up to 5 nearby enemies for 3 seconds; breaks on damage; 2-minute cooldown
Gnome (new)Contingency Plan (20)A ward on an ally: below 35% health they get an absorb shield and a heal over time
DwarfChastise (20)Damages and immobilizes a Humanoid for 2 seconds
HumanDivine Grace (10)Instant heal on an ally below 50% health; can't target yourself
Night ElfStarshards (10)Much more damage, now on a 30-second cooldown
Night ElfElune's Grace (20)Melee and ranged attacks 50% less likely to hit you for 15 seconds or 3 misses
UndeadDark Sacrifice (20)Turns your own health into mana over time; more with Spirit

Gnome Priest is one of the six new class and race combinations in Forever. For solo leveling, Night Elf's Starshards and Elune's Grace and Undead's Dark Sacrifice are the most directly useful.

Professions for a leveling Priest

Wowhead recommends Tailoring and Enchanting. Tailoring turns your cloth into gear and bags, and Wowhead singles out the Novice Arcanist's Sash. Enchanting can make wands, and a better wand is a big upgrade for a Shadow Priest who finishes every mob with one.

Add Cooking, and consider First Aid if you play Shadow to save mana on healing.

Camp buffs and Legacy perks for Priests

Some camp buffs overlap with your own buffs, as Wowhead points out:

Camp featureProfessionNote for Priests
Mana WellAlchemyMana regeneration; worth finding
Incense CandleHerbalismIntellect
First Aid KitFirst AidStamina; doesn't stack with your Power Word: Fortitude
Faction BannerTailoringSpirit; doesn't stack with your Divine Spirit
Camp TentLeatherworkingRested XP top-up

Our camping guide explains the rules: one feature per player, sit for one minute, one-hour buffs.

Legacy perks. Wowhead's Priest guide mentions The Quick and the Dead and High Alert as useful picks. Thrill of Adventure restores health and mana on kills, which saves drinking time. You earn Legacy Points at 25, 45 and 60 and from profession milestones.

Common Priest leveling mistakes

  • No wand. A Shadow Priest without a good wand levels slowly. Replace yours whenever you find a better one.
  • Spending mana to the last drop. Finish with the wand and let the five-second rule reset.
  • Forgetting the shield. Power Word: Shield before a mob reaches you prevents pushback.
  • Relying on Shadow Word: Death to finish. If the target survives you take 30% of your maximum health as damage since Blizzard's November 2 notes.
  • Ignoring Devouring Contagion. Chain-pulling with a jumping Plague is one of Shadow's best tricks in Forever.

Priest leveling checklist

  • Wand Specialization (2 points) at 10
  • Devouring Plague, Fear Ward and Mind Flay at 20
  • Tailoring and Enchanting, plus Cooking
  • Divine Spirit at 30, Shadow Word: Death at 32
  • Shadowform and Dual Spec at 40
  • Upgrade your wand whenever you can

Keep your mana for mobs

Priests lose the most time to drinking and walking. A route cuts the walking. RestedXP's Forever routes give you the next objective with an arrow, so the only downtime left is the drinking. See our RestedXP for WoW Forever page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Priest leveling spec in WoW Forever?

Shadow. Wowhead's Forever leveling guide uses Wand Specialization early, Mind Flay from 20 and Shadowform at 40. Leveling as Discipline for Meditation and switching at 40 is a good alternative.

When do Priests get Shadow Word: Death in WoW Forever?

At level 32. Shadow Word: Death is a baseline ability for all Priests in Forever. If the target survives, you take damage equal to 30% of your maximum health since Blizzard's November 2 notes, up from 10% (no backlash if the spell misses).

Do all Priests get Fear Ward and Devouring Plague in WoW Forever?

Yes. Both are available to every Priest at level 20, whatever their race.

What do Gnome Priests get in WoW Forever?

Two new racial spells. Confounding Flash at level 10 confuses up to five nearby enemies for 3 seconds. Contingency Plan at level 20 shields and heals an ally who drops below 35% health.

What changed with Shadowform in WoW Forever?

Shadowform now lets you cast all non-healing spells, halves the mana cost of Shadow spells and doubles their critical strike damage bonus.

What professions should a Priest take while leveling?

Tailoring and Enchanting, according to Wowhead. Tailoring makes cloth gear such as the Novice Arcanist's Sash, and Enchanting can make wands.

Do camp buffs stack with Power Word: Fortitude?

No. The First Aid Kit's Stamina buff doesn't stack with Power Word: Fortitude, and the Faction Banner's Spirit doesn't stack with Divine Spirit.
