Hunter Leveling Guide for WoW Forever: Beast Mastery Talents, Rotation and Tips
Level a Hunter in WoW Forever: Beast Mastery talents, pet tips, Aimed Shot at 20, new trap and Auto Shot rules, professions, camp buffs and Legacy perks.
EnlargeLevel a Hunter as Beast Mastery in WoW Forever. Your pet tanks, you shoot, and you barely stop to rest, which is why Hunter sits at the top of almost every Forever leveling tier list. Tame a Cat or a Raptor as soon as you can and keep its Claw or Bite rank current. Keep Hunter's Mark and Serpent Sting up and fill with Arcane Shot and the baseline Aimed Shot from level 20. Wowhead's Forever leveling guide ends at a 31/16/4 Beast Mastery / Marksmanship / Survival build at 60.
This guide covers what Forever changed for Hunters while leveling, the spec and talents to pick, your pet, rotation, professions, camp buffs and Legacy perks. For the full list of class changes, see our Hunter changes in WoW Forever page. For how Hunter compares with the other eight classes, see the best leveling class tier list.
Sources: Blizzard's Hunter and Druid class deep dive, Wowhead's Beast Mastery Hunter leveling guide and Wowhead's October 30 class tuning report. Checked 4 November 2026; talent order from WoW Forever DB. The beta stopped at level 30, so advice for 31–60 hasn't been tested on live servers yet.
Why Hunter is the easiest leveler in Forever
Three things make Hunter fast and forgiving:
- The pet takes the hits. Your pet holds the mob while you deal damage from range, so you lose little health and rarely eat between pulls.
- Damage keeps coming while you run. Traps can now be used in combat, according to Blizzard, and Wowhead notes that ranged attacks don't suffer glancing blows. Kiting is safer than in the original game.
- Aimed Shot is baseline. Blizzard made Aimed Shot a baseline ability at level 20 instead of a deep Marksmanship talent. Every Hunter gets a strong opener without spending points.
The trade-off is upkeep: ammunition, pet food and pet happiness. Buy ammo in bulk whenever you visit a town and keep a stack of food your pet likes.
Best Hunter leveling spec: Beast Mastery
| Spec | Leveling verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery | Best | Stronger, tougher pet; most forgiving; Wowhead's recommended leveling spec |
| Marksmanship | Good | More of your own damage, but you take more hits when the pet loses aggro |
| Survival | Situational | Utility talents are useful; weaker as a main leveling tree |
Wowhead's guide spends most points in Beast Mastery, then Marksmanship for extra damage, with a few points in Survival, finishing at 31/16/4 at 60. Blizzard added Lone Wolf, an 11-point milestone talent that gives 20% more damage while you have no active pet. We don't recommend it for leveling: your pet tanks for you, and that's what makes Hunter leveling so smooth.
Talents: how the Forever tree works
Forever uses reworked talent trees. Blizzard's deep dives give the structure that matters while leveling:
- Talent points start at level 10.
- Each tree has milestone talents that unlock at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points spent in that tree.
- You can respec at your class trainer in a major city.
- Dual Spec unlocks at level 40.
Blizzard tuned Hunter talents during the beta, and its November 2 notes move Pathfinding from the second to the third row of Beast Mastery, so you reach it later than in older guides. Community guides built on the launch talent layout agree on the first points. WoW Forever DB's Beast Mastery leveling guide gives this order to level 21:
| Levels | Talent | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 10–14 | Deadly Aspects 5/5 | With Aspect of the Hawk active, Auto Shot has a 10% chance to give +30% ranged attack speed for 12 seconds |
| 15–16 | Focused Fire 2/2 | Extra damage while your pet is out |
| 17–19 | Endurance Training 3/5 | Tougher pet (more health) |
| 20–21 | Pathfinding 2/2 | Travel-speed talent; now needs 10 points above it |
Deadly Aspects only works while Aspect of the Hawk is up, so keep Hawk on in every fight. Past level 21, WoW Forever DB continues with Unleashed Fury, Ferocity, Summon Hawk (about 25) and Intimidation (about 30). The beta stopped at level 30, so everything after that is untested on live servers; check the in-game tooltip before you spend a point. The general priorities:
- Pet damage and survivability first. Beast Mastery's early rows improve your pet. That is your damage and your tank in one.
- The Beast Mastery milestones. Take each tree milestone as soon as you reach the points for it.
- Marksmanship damage after the core of Beast Mastery. Wowhead puts 16 points into Marksmanship.
- Summon Hawk when you reach it. Wowhead's rotation uses Summon Hawk as part of the opener once you have the talent.
Launch buffs from the November 2 notes: Aimed Shot bonus damage up about 110%, Arcane Shot base damage up about 30% (Attack Power coefficient 0.10 to 0.15), Serpent Sting up about 20% base with a higher Attack Power coefficient, and higher Ranged Attack Power on every rank of Aspect of the Hawk. All three shots in the rotation below hit harder than in earlier beta builds.
Your pet: what to tame and how to keep it strong
Blizzard says pet families now have family-specific abilities, and the deep dive adds a new Fox family. For leveling, Wowhead's advice is clear:
In short: tame a Cat or Raptor for damage (Wowhead lists both at a 1.1× damage modifier), or a Carrion Bird for Demoralizing Screech. Tame a higher-level pet roughly every ten levels to learn the next rank of Claw or Bite.
Our best Hunter pets guide covers every pet family, the new Fox, the pet changes made during the beta and where to tame your first pet.
Pet tips that save time:
- Feed your pet before a long session, not when it is already unhappy.
- Use Mend Pet while you keep shooting; a dead pet costs you more time than a few seconds of healing.
- Put the pet on the mob first and let it build threat for a moment before you open with your heavy shots.
Hunter leveling rotation
Single target, from Wowhead's leveling guide:
- Send the pet in.
- Hunter's Mark on the target.
- Serpent Sting.
- Summon Hawk once you have it.
- Arcane Shot, about every third rotation, to save mana.
- Aimed Shot from level 20 as your big hit.
- Auto Shot in between. If the mob reaches you, Raptor Strike and step back.
Since the 15 October build there's an Auto Attack/Auto Shot setting: when it's on, Hunters switch between melee auto attack and Auto Shot automatically, also on a gamepad.
Several mobs: use Multi-Shot and your traps. Blizzard notes that Multi-Shot now shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot, so choose one per cooldown; Arcane Shot no longer shares a cooldown with Aimed Shot. Wowhead adds Volley at level 40. Traps can now be used in combat, though Blizzard raised their cooldown to 30 seconds, and since the November 2 notes all traps share one 30-second cooldown (Frost and Fire traps no longer have separate ones). You can still only place a trap at your own location, so drop a Frost Trap at your feet and kite through it when a pull goes wrong.
Getting out of trouble: Feign Death drops threat, and Concussive Shot and Frost Trap slow chasers. Aspect of the Cheetah gets you between quests faster; switch to a combat aspect before you pull.
Level-by-level milestones
| Level | What changes for a Hunter |
|---|---|
| 10 | First talent point |
| 20 | Aimed Shot baseline (Blizzard) |
| 25 | First Legacy Point from leveling |
| 40 | Dual Spec unlocks; Volley (Wowhead) |
| 45 | Second Legacy Point from leveling |
| 60 | Third Legacy Point from leveling; Wowhead's final build is 31/16/4 |
Professions for a leveling Hunter
Wowhead recommends Skinning and Leatherworking. Skinning gives you money from every beast you kill, and you kill a lot of them. Leatherworking turns that leather into mail and leather armor upgrades, and from skill 20 it lets you place the Camp Tent, which tops up your rested XP in the field.
Add Cooking for pet food and your own campfire, and First Aid for bandages between pulls.
Camp buffs and Legacy perks for Hunters
Camping is new in Forever. Each nearby player places one profession feature at a campfire and everyone sitting there for a minute gets a one-hour buff. Hunters benefit most from:
- Camp Chair (Skinning): 2% critical strike with spells and attacks.
- Fish Bowl (Fishing): 8% stats.
- Camp Tent (Leatherworking): rested experience up to 5% of a level.
The Lodestone only raises melee attack power, so it does little for a Hunter shooting from range. Our WoW Forever camping guide lists every feature.
Legacy perks. Forever's Legacy system gives you Legacy Points for reaching levels 25, 45 and 60, among other challenges. Well Rested boosts your rested XP, and with enough points in it you can unlock Talented, which lets you start spending talents at level 5. Thrill of Adventure restores health and mana on kills. Hunters lose little health between pulls already, so Well Rested and Talented are usually the better first picks.
Races for a Hunter in Forever
Blizzard added Human Hunter as one of six new race and class combinations. Dwarves keep a Hunter-flavored racial: Blizzard says Big Game Hunter grants increased damage against Beasts, and Hunters fight a lot of beasts while leveling. Pick the race you like playing; racial differences are small next to pet choice and talents. Our races and racials guide compares every race.
Common Hunter leveling mistakes
- Running out of ammo in the middle of a zone. Buy enough for your whole session.
- Letting the pet fall behind on ranks. A pet with a Claw rank from twenty levels ago hits like it.
- Spending all your mana on Arcane Shot. Wowhead uses it about every third rotation for a reason.
- Pulling with Aimed Shot before the pet has threat. Let the pet hold the mob first.
- Melee range panic. Step back and let the pet pull aggro back, or use Feign Death.
Hunter leveling checklist
- Tame a Cat or Raptor as early as you can (or a Carrion Bird for Demoralizing Screech)
- Spend talents in Beast Mastery first
- Learn Aimed Shot at 20
- Upgrade pet Claw or Bite about every ten levels
- Skinning plus Leatherworking, with Cooking and First Aid
- Stock ammo and pet food before every session
- Learn Volley and pick a second spec at 40
Route it, then shoot it
A Hunter spends most leveling time between quests, not fighting. A route that tells you the next objective removes the biggest slowdown. RestedXP's Forever routes include class steps, such as Hunter pet taming. Compare it with other tools on our RestedXP for WoW Forever page.
Route changes on 3 November. RestedXP's 3 November update changed several Hunter steps. In Skyborne, Horde Hunters now pick the two-handed sword after "Foul Matriarch". On the Alliance side, Hunters do Redridge in one loop in the 24–27 Duskwood and Redridge section, with the new quests "Wanted: Incinerator Gar'im" and "Blackrock Blockade". The lost NPCs in Duskwood are now Undead, so RestedXP has you use Track Undead to find them. If you already own the guide, re-import it after updating (how).
Try before you pay: RestedXP's free chapters cover levels 1–20. If you buy, the 10% RestedXP discount applies automatically through our link, and our RestedXP review lists the drawbacks as well as the strengths.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Hunter leveling spec in WoW Forever?
Beast Mastery. Wowhead's Forever leveling guide recommends it for its stronger pet and forgiving play, and ends at a 31/16/4 Beast Mastery / Marksmanship / Survival build at level 60.
What is the first talent for a Beast Mastery Hunter in WoW Forever?
Deadly Aspects, 5/5 from level 10 to 14. With Aspect of the Hawk active, Auto Shot has a 10% chance to give 30% ranged attack speed for 12 seconds. WoW Forever DB then takes Focused Fire, Endurance Training and Pathfinding by level 21.
What pet should I tame for leveling in WoW Forever?
A Cat or a Raptor for damage, as both have a 1.1× damage modifier according to Wowhead. A Carrion Bird is a good alternative for its Demoralizing Screech. Tame a higher-level pet about every ten levels to learn a new rank of Claw or Bite.
When do Hunters get Aimed Shot in WoW Forever?
At level 20. Blizzard made Aimed Shot a baseline ability, so you no longer need a deep Marksmanship talent to use it.
Is Hunter the fastest leveling class in WoW Forever?
It is at or near the top of most beta-based tier lists, together with Warlock, mainly because the pet tanks and you rarely rest. The beta ended at level 30, so rankings past that are forecasts. See our best leveling class page for the full comparison.
What professions should a Hunter take while leveling?
Skinning and Leatherworking. Skinning makes money from the beasts you kill and Leatherworking turns it into armor and the Camp Tent. Add Cooking and First Aid.
Can I level a Hunter without a pet in WoW Forever?
Yes. Blizzard added Lone Wolf, a talent that grants 20% more damage while you have no active pet, but for leveling the pet is your tank, so most players will level faster with one.
When do Hunters get Dual Spec?
At level 40, like every class in Forever. You can also respec at your class trainer in a major city at any time.
