Level a Rogue as Combat in WoW Forever. Use swords, maces, fist weapons or the new one-handed axes, spam Sinister Strike and finish with Eviscerate or Slice and Dice. Get your poisons from the class quest as soon as it's offered. Wowhead's Forever leveling guide starts with Improved Sinister Strike (renamed Efficient Strikes on November 2) and Remorseless Attacks, then respecs toward Riposte at level 20. Blizzard's November 2 notes add Poised at 18 and a new off-hand attack, Shank, at 24. Forever's poison changes make Rogue leveling noticeably smoother: poisons have more charges and now sit on your weapon together with a sharpening stone.

This guide covers what Forever changed for Rogues, then spec, talents, rotation, poisons, professions, camp buffs and Legacy perks. Rogue doesn't have a separate changes page on our site yet, so the leveling-relevant changes are listed below.

Sources: Blizzard's Rogue and Warlock class deep dive and Wowhead's Combat Rogue leveling guide. Checked 3 November 2026 and updated on 4 November against Blizzard's November 2 development notes. The beta stopped at level 30, so 31–60 is still a forecast.

What Forever changed for leveling Rogues

From Blizzard's deep dive:

  • Poisons have more charges and can now be applied at the same time as Sharpening Stones and Weightstones. You no longer choose between them.
  • One-handed axes. Rogues can now learn to use one-handed axes, which widens the weapons you can use while leveling. Our weapon skills guide lists where to train them.
  • Sap no longer breaks Stealth. You can Sap a mob and stay in Stealth to deal with the next one.
  • Distract also reduces enemies' Stealth detection for 10 seconds.
  • Feint reduces twice as much threat. That matters more in dungeons than solo.
  • Expose Armor now reduces as much armor as five Sunder Armors.

Blizzard's November 2 development notes added more:

  • Poised (level 18): out of combat at full energy, your next energy ability costs 10 less.
  • Shank (level 24): 5 energy, 10-second cooldown. An off-hand strike for 50% weapon damage that can't miss and generates 15 energy (25 at rank 2, level 44). You need an off-hand weapon.
  • Poisons hit harder: Deadly Poison and Instant Poison now get twice as much from attack power.

Weapon-type talents were merged too. Combat's new Hack and Slash combines the old Dagger, Mace, Sword and Fist Weapon Specializations and adds a bonus for axes. You get value from whichever weapon you find.

Best Rogue leveling spec: Combat

SpecLeveling verdictWhy
CombatBestSteady damage with any weapon; Riposte and Blade Flurry; Wowhead's leveling pick
AssassinationGood laterMutilate is now a 31-point talent and needs daggers in both hands; Venom (row 5) boosts poisons after Shank
SubtletySituationalStrong opener play, but slower kills while questing

Combat suits a leveling Rogue because it works with whatever weapon drops. Assassination's Mutilate is strong but requires a dagger in each hand and, since November 2, 31 points in the tree.

Combat talents for leveling

Talents start at level 10. Milestones unlock at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree. You can respec at your class trainer in a major city, and Dual Spec unlocks at 40.

Wowhead's order for leveling:

  1. Efficient Strikes (formerly Improved Sinister Strike) first, for Sinister Strikes that cost 3 or 5 less energy.
  2. Remorseless Attacks, for crits after each kill.
  3. At level 20, respec toward Riposte in the Combat tree, then put the 2 points back into Remorseless Attacks. Wowhead describes Riposte as an attack off the global cooldown that disarms the target for 6 seconds.

Combat talents from Blizzard's deep dive worth knowing:

TalentWhat it does in Forever
Coup de Grace (formerly Improved Eviscerate)Row 1 of Combat; Eviscerate deals 7/13/20% more damage
PrecisionNow raises hit with all attacks and poisons
EnduranceLowers the cooldowns of Sprint and Evasion by a percentage
Composure (row 3, new)Poised saves 5 or 10 more energy
Flawless Execution (16-point milestone)Eviscerate costs 15 less energy (was 10)
Hack and SlashOne talent covering all weapon types, including axes
Weapon Expertise (row 4)Reduces the target's chance to dodge or parry
Aggression (row 4)Sinister Strike and Eviscerate deal 5/10/15% more damage; no longer affects Backstab
Dual Wield Specialization (row 5)Now 2 points for 25/50% more off-hand damage
Flash of Steel (row 6, new)More energy from Shank and a shorter Shank cooldown

Wowhead's leveling guide also mentions taking Talented from the Legacy tree so you can reach Blade Flurry earlier. These follow Blizzard's November 2 notes; check tooltips in game.

Rogue leveling rotation

From Wowhead's Combat guide:

  1. Open from Stealth if the mob is alone, or simply walk in. Combat is about sustained damage, not openers.
  2. Sinister Strike until you have the combo points you need. From 24, use Shank on cooldown: it costs 5 energy and gives back 15.
  3. Slice and Dice first on tougher mobs, then Eviscerate to finish.
  4. On easy mobs, skip Slice and Dice and go straight for Eviscerate.

When it goes wrong: Gouge the mob, step back and let your energy refill, then go back in. Wowhead also suggests Gouge to run away from a fight you can't win. Evasion and Sprint are your emergency buttons, and Vanish arrives at level 22.

Several mobs: Blade Flurry when you have it. Otherwise Gouge or Sap one, kill the other.

Poisons and Thistle Tea

Wowhead's guide gives Rogues a class quest for poisons: Klaven's Tower or Mission: Possible But Not Probable, depending on your faction. Wowhead calls it the most important thing to do as a Rogue. It also rewards Thistle Tea, which restores energy. Do it as soon as it's offered.

Forever's poison changes help here:

  • More charges means fewer re-applications per session.
  • Poisons and sharpening stones stack, so keep both on.

For other consumables, Wowhead recommends anything that raises Agility, such as Elixir of Minor Agility and Coyote Steak.

Professions for a leveling Rogue

The classic pick is Skinning and Leatherworking: you wear leather and Leatherworking makes the upgrades from the hides you skin. Skinning's Camp Chair gives 2% crit at camps. For money, Mining and Skinning is also strong, and Mining's Lodestone boosts your melee attack power.

Take First Aid. Bandaging between pulls is the Rogue's cheapest healing. Add Cooking for food buffs and your own campfire.

Camp buffs and Legacy perks for Rogues

Wowhead's Rogue guide names three camp features to look for:

Camp featureProfessionBuff
Camp ChairSkinning2% crit with spells and attacks
Sharpening WheelBlacksmithingStrength
LodestoneMiningMelee attack power

Each player can place one feature, and you get its one-hour buff after sitting at the campfire for one minute. See our camping guide for every feature.

Legacy perks. Wowhead suggests Thrill of Adventure, for health and mana back on kills, or Talented for an earlier Blade Flurry. Gourmand makes Well Fed food buffs last longer, which suits a Rogue who eats between pulls. You earn Legacy Points at 25, 45 and 60 and from profession milestones.

Common Rogue leveling mistakes

  • Leveling without poisons. Do the class quest as soon as you can.
  • Using only daggers with Combat. Combat's Sinister Strike build works with any weapon; Hack and Slash now covers axes too.
  • Slice and Dice on every mob. Save it for tougher mobs; easy ones die faster to Eviscerate.
  • Fighting at low energy. Gouge, back off and let energy come back.
  • Forgetting sharpening stones. In Forever they stack with poisons.

Rogue leveling checklist

  • Efficient Strikes and Remorseless Attacks from 10
  • Shank on cooldown from 24
  • Respec toward Riposte at 20
  • Complete the poison class quest and keep Thistle Tea for emergencies
  • Keep poisons and a sharpening stone on your weapons
  • Learn Vanish at 22
  • Skinning plus Leatherworking or Mining, with First Aid and Cooking
  • Set a second spec at 40

Spend energy on mobs, not on getting lost

Rogues kill steadily, so the biggest leveling gains come from moving between quests without stopping. RestedXP's Forever routes give the next pickup, objective and turn-in with an arrow. See our RestedXP for WoW Forever page.

Before you buy: RestedXP has no coupon code to hunt for, because our RestedXP discount link takes 10% off automatically. Levels 1–20 are free (what's free in RestedXP), and our RestedXP review covers what the paid routes do well and where they fall short.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Rogue leveling spec in WoW Forever?

Combat. It works with swords, maces, fist weapons and now axes, and Wowhead's Forever leveling guide uses it with Sinister Strike, Eviscerate and Slice and Dice.

Can Rogues use axes in WoW Forever?

Yes. Blizzard lets Rogues learn one-handed axes in Forever, and the Combat talent Hack and Slash includes a bonus for axes.

Do poisons stack with sharpening stones in WoW Forever?

Yes. Blizzard says poisons can now be applied together with temporary weapon enchantments such as Sharpening Stones and Weightstones, and every poison has more charges.

How do Rogues get poisons in WoW Forever?

From the Rogue class quest, Klaven's Tower or Mission: Possible But Not Probable depending on your faction, according to Wowhead. The quest also rewards Thistle Tea.

When do Rogues get Vanish in WoW Forever?

At level 22, according to Wowhead's leveling guide.

Is Mutilate good for leveling a Rogue?

Not until late. Blizzard's November 2 notes moved Mutilate to row 7 of Assassination, so it is now a 31-point talent (about level 40 without Legacy talent points), and it still needs a dagger in each hand. Its damage was raised to 90% weapon damage. Combat is smoother while leveling; switch with Dual Spec at 40 if you want Mutilate.

Does Sap break Stealth in WoW Forever?

No. Blizzard changed Sap so that using it no longer breaks Stealth.
