Duo Leveling in WoW Forever: Group XP Rules, Best Pairs and Tips
Duo leveling in WoW Forever: how group XP works after the October 8 change, which quests to share, good class pairs, camps for two and RestedXP's group options.
EnlargeDuo leveling in WoW Forever is usually faster than solo if you pick the right quests. Kill XP is split between you, but quest turn-in XP isn't, and a pair kills faster, rests less, dies less and can do elite quests you'd skip alone. Two things changed in the beta: since 8 October party XP depends on each player's own level, and nobody gets XP if one member is far above the enemies, so a level 60 friend can't boost you.
This page explains the group XP rules, which quests to do together and which to split, good duo pairs, and how camps and RestedXP's group options help.

How group XP works in Forever
| Rule | What it means for a duo | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Kill XP is divided by party size, with a bonus in larger groups (×1.4 for five players) | Each kill gives you less, so you need to kill faster to come out ahead | Warcraft Tavern |
| Quest turn-in XP is not split | Kill-quests done together are pure gain | Warcraft Tavern |
| Party XP depends on each player's own level | Stay within a few levels of each other | Blizzard, 8 October |
| No XP if a member is far above the enemies' level | No boosting by a high-level friend | Blizzard, 8 October |
| Grouped players share kill credit | No fighting over tags at launch | Standard group rule |
| Bad-luck protection on quest drops | Collect quests are less painful, but each player still loots their own | Warcraft Tavern |
Which quests to do together
Do together:
- Kill quests. Kill credit is shared, so "kill 10" is done for both of you at once.
- Elite and group quests. The quests solo players skip are often the best XP per minute for a duo.
- Dangerous camps. Fewer deaths is the biggest time saver in any leveling plan.
- Dungeons at the low end of their range, if your duo is strong (a tank and healer). Dungeon kill XP rose about 20% on 8 October, but dungeon quests lost half of their extra XP on 1 October.
Split up or stay flexible:
- Collect quests with low drop rates, where both of you need your own items.
- Travel and turn-ins when your logs diverge. Sharing quests on accept keeps them aligned.
Good duo pairs
These are our picks, based on how the classes play in Forever. They aren't measured rankings.
| Duo | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Warrior + Priest | Prot Warrior holds packs from 16; Priest heals and adds Shadow damage. See Prot Warrior leveling |
| Paladin + Mage | Paladin holds and heals; Mage AoE gets much safer with a tank. See Mage AoE leveling |
| Warrior + Shaman | Strong melee pair with healing and totems |
| Hunter + Hunter | Two pets tanking, no downtime, simple and fast |
| Warlock + Warlock | Two Voidwalkers, Life Tap and Drain Life; very safe |
| Rogue + Priest | Burst plus healing; the Priest's Shadow spells cover the Rogue's weak spots |
Since both factions now have both Paladins and Shamans (Undead Paladin and Dwarf Shaman are new), every hybrid pair is possible on either side. See our races and racials guide.
Camps are better with two
Blizzard's camping system lets each player add one feature to a campfire, and everyone who sits there for a minute gets all of them. Solo, you get one feature. As a duo with two different professions, you get two at every stop, for example a Mining Lodestone and a Leatherworking tent. Our camping guide lists every feature.
Leveling as a duo with RestedXP
RestedXP's addon has group options in its settings (from its public source code on GitHub):
- Show Group Quests: includes the route's group-quest steps instead of skipping them.
- Share quests: tries to share each quest with your party when you accept it. Off by default.
- Share Active Step: shares your current step with your group. On by default.
- Follow Party Leader macro: one partner leads, the other follows.
Its multibox mode is limited to retail in the code, so we don't expect it in Forever.
Duo leveling tips
- Stay within a few levels. Party XP depends on each player's level; a big gap costs the lower player.
- Log out together at an inn so both of you build rested XP.
- Eat crafted food for the kill XP bonus. Our leveling time guide covers every XP buff.
- Pull bigger, but not huge. Two players can handle more than one, but most deaths in groups come from overpulling.
- Pick professions that complement each other, such as Mining and Blacksmithing plus Herbalism and Alchemy. See professions.
Frequently asked questions
Is duo leveling faster in WoW Forever?
Often, but not automatically. Each kill's XP is split between the party, while quest turn-in XP is not, so a duo that kills faster, rests less and completes elite quests safely usually comes out ahead. Collect quests, where each player has to loot their own items, are slower in a group.
How does party XP work in WoW Forever?
Warcraft Tavern reports that kill XP is divided by the party size, with a bonus in larger groups (×1.4 for five players). Blizzard's October 8 notes made party XP depend on each player's own level, as in Classic Era, and nobody gets XP if a party member is far above the enemy's level.
Can a high-level friend boost me in WoW Forever?
Not for XP. Since Blizzard's October 8 beta update, nobody in the party gets experience when a member is vastly higher level than the enemies. Group with players near your level.
What is the best duo for leveling in WoW Forever?
A tank or durable damage dealer plus a healer is the safest: Warrior and Priest, Paladin and Mage, or Warrior and Shaman. Two Hunters or two Warlocks are fast and simple. These are our picks, not measured rankings.
Does RestedXP support duo leveling?
RestedXP's addon has group options: it can show group quests, share quests with your party on accept (off by default), share your active step with the group (on by default), and create a follow-party-leader macro. Its multibox mode is limited to retail, so don't expect it in Forever.
