Marksmanship and Survival Hunter in WoW Forever are no longer just places to dump spare points. Blizzard rebuilt both trees: Marksmanship gets Lone Wolf, a petless 20% damage bonus, and Sniper Shot, a 45-yard 31-point shot. Survival becomes a trap-and-melee tree with Strider Kick and Lacerating Strikes. The 2 November notes then buffed Aimed Shot, Arcane Shot and Serpent Sting for every Hunter. Our Hunter leveling guide still recommends Beast Mastery, the safest solo tree. This page covers the other two: what changed, and when each one is worth leveling.

Talents start at level 10, with one-point milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points in a tree. Dual Specialization unlocks at level 40 (class deep dive).

Baseline changes every Hunter gets

  • Aimed Shot is baseline at level 20. It shares a cooldown with Multi-Shot, not with Arcane Shot. On 2 November its bonus damage rose by about 110% on all ranks.
  • Arcane Shot gained about 30% base damage, and its attack power coefficient went from 0.1 to 0.15 (2 November).
  • Serpent Sting now scales at 5% of attack power per tick (was 3%), with about 20% more base damage.
  • Aspect of the Hawk gives more ranged attack power on every rank: 20, 35, 50, 70, 90 and 110.
  • Traps work in combat. Since 2 November all traps share one 30-second cooldown, and you can still have one Fire and one Frost trap down at once (15 October).
  • Auto Shot needs you to stand still for 0.5 seconds before it fires, as in early WoW (15 October). Kiting costs more damage than in Classic Era.

Marksmanship in WoW Forever

From the class deep dive and later notes:

  • Lone Wolf (11-point milestone): 20% more damage with all attacks while you have no active pet.
  • Careful Aim: melee and ranged attack power equal to up to 100% of your Intellect.
  • Lethal Attacks (formerly Lethal Shots): crit chance for all attacks, now in row 1 with Hawk Eye.
  • Improved Stings: more Serpent Sting damage, a shorter Viper Sting cooldown and a longer Scorpid Sting.
  • Efficiency: a bigger Mana discount that now also covers Stings and melee abilities.
  • Rapid Killing and Rapid Recuperation: a shorter Rapid Fire cooldown, a damage boost to your next shot after a kill, and Mana regeneration while casting after Serpent Sting hits.
  • Trueshot Aura is now the 21-point milestone. It became raid-wide on 15 October, and on 2 November its ranks rose to 20, 35, 50, 75 and 100 ranged attack power.
  • Barrage also boosts Aimed Shot, and gives 5/10/15% since 2 November (was 3/7/10%).
  • Sniper Shot (31 points): 4-second cast, 15-second cooldown, 45-yard range, and 10 more yards on your next 3 shots. Its bonus damage was doubled on 2 November.

For leveling: Marksmanship works two ways. With a pet it adds shot damage after the core of Beast Mastery, which is the hybrid our main Hunter guide uses. Without a pet, Lone Wolf gives you 20% more damage but nothing holds aggro, so you lean on traps, Concussive Shot and the extra range. That suits careful players who pull one mob at a time. The shot buffs on 2 November make it a better choice than it was during most of the beta.

Survival in WoW Forever

Blizzard says Survival supports "trap or melee-oriented build options" (class deep dive). Key talents:

  • Savage Strikes: 2/4% more damage for all melee attacks.
  • Improved Tracking: more damage against whatever creature type you are tracking. It replaces Monster Slaying and Humanoid Slaying.
  • Surefooted: hit chance for all attacks and shorter snares.
  • Counterattack (16-point milestone) and Expose Prey: hitting your Hunter's Mark target can enable Mongoose Bite, and Expose Prey lasts 10 seconds since 8 October.
  • Predator's Edge: more critical strike damage from abilities and more off-hand damage when you dual-wield.
  • Resourcefulness: cheaper traps and melee abilities. Since 15 October, Spirit-based Mana regeneration triggers only from melee and ranged ability crits, not from traps.
  • Entrapment roots on the trap's first trigger only, with diminishing returns (8 October).
  • Strider Kick (21 points): an instant weapon attack plus 30% movement speed for 3 seconds, usable even when disarmed.
  • Lightning Reflexes: 3/6/9/12/15% Agility since 2 November (was 2–10%).
  • Lacerating Strikes (31 points): Mongoose Bite also makes the target bleed for 21 seconds.

Beast Mastery's Deadly Aspects and Aspect of the Beast's new melee attack power round out a melee build.

For leveling: Survival has the most new tools and the least testing. The public beta was capped at level 30, before Strider Kick and Lacerating Strikes, so nobody has played the full tree on live servers. Hunters still can't stun or interrupt, and the 8-yard dead zone remains. Try Survival through Dual Specialization at 40 rather than as your only build.

Which tree should you pick?

  1. Default: Beast Mastery first, then Marksmanship for shot damage. See the Hunter leveling guide and the pet guide.
  2. Pick Marksmanship with Lone Wolf if you dislike managing a pet and pull carefully.
  3. Pick Survival for melee and trap play, ideally as a second build from level 40. The talents and dual spec guide explains the switch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Marksmanship good for leveling in WoW Forever?

Yes, as a second tree behind Beast Mastery or as a petless build with Lone Wolf. Blizzard's November 2 notes raised Aimed Shot's bonus damage by about 110%, Arcane Shot by about 30%, and buffed Serpent Sting, Barrage, Sniper Shot and Trueshot Aura. Beast Mastery is still the safest solo spec because the pet tanks.

What does Lone Wolf do in WoW Forever?

Lone Wolf is the 11-point Marksmanship milestone talent. It gives the Hunter 20% more damage with all attacks while no pet is active, according to Blizzard's Hunter class deep dive.

Is Survival a melee spec in WoW Forever?

It can be. Blizzard built Survival around traps and melee: Savage Strikes raises all melee damage, Strider Kick is a 21-point weapon attack, Lacerating Strikes makes Mongoose Bite bleed, and Predator's Edge improves off-hand damage when dual-wielding. It is the least proven leveling tree, so test it before committing.

What is Sniper Shot?

The 31-point Marksmanship talent: a 4-second cast with a 15-second cooldown and 45-yard range that hits harder than Aimed Shot and adds 10 yards to your next 3 shots. Its bonus damage was doubled in the November 2 notes.

Can Hunters use traps in combat in WoW Forever?

Yes. Traps are usable in combat. Since the November 2 notes all traps share one 30-second cooldown, but you can still have one Fire trap and one Frost trap active at the same time.
