For leveling a Hunter in WoW Forever, tame a Cat or a Raptor for damage, or a Carrion Bird for safety. Wowhead lists Cats and Raptors with a 1.1× damage modifier, while the Carrion Bird brings Demoralizing Screech, which weakens whatever you fight and makes it a favourite for Hardcore. Whatever you pick, keep Claw or Bite at a current rank: tame a newer pet about every ten levels, and remember that Forever no longer lets you tame beasts above your level.

This page covers the best leveling pets, what changed for pets in Forever, how to keep your pet's abilities current and where to tame your first pet in each starting zone.

Sources: Blizzard's Hunter and Druid class deep dive and beta notes of September 18, October 15 and November 2, Wowhead's Beast Mastery leveling guide and Carrion Bird page, the fan database 60.tools' Hunter pet tables and RestedXP's Forever route files. Checked 4 November 2026. Pet family values from 60.tools are datamined fan data.

Family modifiers other than Wowhead's Cat, Raptor and Carrion Bird notes come from 60.tools, a fan database built from game data. Blizzard may still tune them.

Our take: a Cat or Raptor if you play carefully and want speed, a Carrion Bird if you play Hardcore or pull a lot of mobs, and a Boar or Bear for the first levels if your pet keeps losing threat. Beta players often named the Carrion Bird the best all-round leveling pet, but that's community opinion, not tested data.

What changed for pets in Forever

  • Pets scale with your gear (Blizzard's Hunter deep dive), so ranged upgrades help your pet too.
  • New family abilities. Foxes join as a new family, Owls are renamed Bird of Prey, and several families gained their own ability: Swipe for Bears, Savage Rend for Raptors, Dismember for Crocolisks, Mine! for Birds of Prey, Pinch for Crabs, Tendon Rip for Hyenas, Web for Spiders and Dust Cloud for Tallstriders (60.tools).
  • No taming above your level. Blizzard's September 18 notes: Tame Beast no longer works on beasts higher level than the Hunter.
  • Some family abilities toned down. On 15 October Blizzard limited Dismember (25% healing reduction for 6 seconds, 15-second cooldown), Sonic Blast (30% slower casting for 20 seconds, 60-second cooldown) and Mine! (3-second disarm, 90-second cooldown), and pets now inherit the higher of your melee and ranged crit chance.
  • Furious Howl lost 40% of its attack power bonus (18 September).
  • Untrained pets keep their attack speed. Since 2 November, a pet's innate attack speed passive stays even if you haven't trained it.
  • Orc Command is back: +5% pet damage for Orc Hunters and Warlocks (2 November). See races and racials.

Keep Claw and Bite current

Wowhead's advice is to tame a newer pet roughly every ten levels to learn the next rank of Claw or Bite, then teach it to your main pet:

  1. Tame a beast that knows the rank you need. It must be your level or lower in Forever.
  2. Fight with it until it learns the ability (learning by use, as in Classic).
  3. Stable it or abandon it, bring back your main pet and teach the rank through Beast Training.

Wowhead names the Clattering Crawler, Shore Crawler, Black Bear Patriarch and Den Mother as sources of Claw ranks. 60.tools lets you search every tameable beast by zone, family and ability.

Where to tame your first pet

RestedXP's Forever routes include the Hunter taming steps for each starting area. The beasts they use:

Dwarf and Gnome landsLarge Crag Boar, Snow Leopard, Ice Claw Bear
Night ElfWebwood Lurker

Pet tips that save time

  • Let the pet build threat for a moment before you open with Aimed Shot or Arcane Shot.
  • Mend Pet early. A dead pet costs more time than a few seconds of healing.
  • Feed before long sessions. An unhappy pet does less damage.
  • Traps share a 30-second cooldown since 2 November, so plan which trap you need.
  • Go Beast Mastery. Our Hunter leveling guide has the talents, rotation and professions, and our Hunter changes page covers the rest of the class.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Hunter pet for leveling in WoW Forever?

For damage, a Cat or a Raptor: Wowhead lists both with a 1.1× damage modifier. For safety, a Carrion Bird: its Demoralizing Screech weakens what you fight, and Wowhead calls it great for Hardcore. Many beta players liked the Carrion Bird as an all-round leveling pet, but that's opinion, not measured data.

What pet families are new in WoW Forever?

The Fox is a new family, and the Owl is renamed Bird of Prey. Several families gained their own ability, for example Swipe for Bears, Savage Rend for Raptors, Dismember for Crocolisks and Mine! for Birds of Prey, according to the fan database 60.tools.

Can you tame higher-level beasts in WoW Forever?

No. Blizzard's beta notes say Tame Beast no longer works on beasts above the Hunter's level. To learn higher ranks of Claw or Bite, tame a pet at or below your level every ten levels or so.

How often should I replace my Hunter pet while leveling?

Wowhead recommends taming a newer pet roughly every ten levels to learn higher ranks of Claw or Bite, then teaching them to your main pet. Feed your pet and keep its abilities current, because a weak pet slows every fight.

Which race is best for a pet Hunter in WoW Forever?

Orc, for Command: Blizzard re-added it on November 2 with +5% Hunter and Warlock pet damage. On the Alliance side, Dwarf's Big Game Hunter and Artisan's Precision help your own damage. Human Hunter is new in Forever.
