Assassination and Subtlety Rogue Leveling in WoW Forever
Assassination and Subtlety Rogue in WoW Forever: Mutilate, Venom and Shank, Death Mark, Boot Knife, the Nov 2 talent changes, and when to level as each.
EnlargeAssassination and Subtlety Rogue in WoW Forever both changed a lot on November 2: Shank arrived as a new ability, Venom became a passive tied to it, Mutilate moved down the Assassination tree, and Subtlety got a new finisher, Death Mark. Blizzard describes Assassination as "a Poison-focused playstyle" and Subtlety as "combat tricks and Bleeds" (Rogue and Warlock deep dive). For leveling, Combat stays our pick; this page covers when the other two make sense. The main class guide is our Rogue leveling guide.
Which Rogue spec for leveling?
| Spec | Leveling verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Combat | Best (see the Rogue guide) | Works with any weapon, steady damage |
| Assassination | Good later | Mutilate needs two daggers and sits in row 7; strong poisons before that |
| Subtlety | Situational | Openers, Bleeds and Death Mark; slower kills while questing |
You can keep a second spec after level 40 with Dual Specialization (talents and dual spec).
Rogue changes that affect every spec
- Shank (new, level 24): 5 Energy, 10-second cooldown, off-hand strike for 50% weapon damage that generates 15 Energy and can't miss. Rank 2 at level 44 generates 25 Energy (November 2 notes).
- Poised (new, level 18): out of combat at full Energy, your next Energy ability costs 10 less (November 2).
- Poisons: more charges, usable alongside sharpening stones and weightstones, and since November 2 Deadly and Instant Poison scale twice as much with attack power (deep dive, November 2).
- Sap no longer breaks Stealth, Feint reduces twice as much threat, and Rogues can use one-handed axes (deep dive). Our weapon skills guide covers training them.

Leveling as Assassination
- Level as Combat until you can reach Mutilate, or spend early points in Malice, Improved Poisons and Blood Splatter if you prefer poisons.
- Keep Deadly Poison on one weapon and Instant Poison on the other.
- From level 24, press Shank on cooldown: it refunds Energy and, with Venom, buffs your Poisons.
- With Mutilate: open with Garrote or Cheap Shot, Mutilate to 5 Combo Points, then keep Slice and Dice up. Blizzard expects Assassination finishers to go to buffs before Rupture and Eviscerate (deep dive).
Leveling as Subtlety
Subtlety rewards picking fights: Sap one target, open from Stealth with Ambush or Garrote, and use Ghostly Strike to Ambush again mid-fight. Boot Knife turns Shank into a Combo Point engine and Death Mark is your burst finisher. It is slower than Combat when you fight mob after mob, so treat it as a fun or PvP-flavoured choice, not the fast one.
What isn't confirmed yet
- How Mutilate and Death Mark feel while leveling; both are in row 7, past the level 30 beta cap.
- Exact damage of Death Mark; Blizzard gave the design only.

Frequently asked questions
Is Assassination Rogue good for leveling in WoW Forever?
It's good later in the climb. Mutilate needs a dagger in each hand and sits in row 7 of the tree since November 2, so Assassination comes online late. Until then Combat, which works with any weapon, is the smoother leveling spec.
What does Venom do in WoW Forever?
Since November 2 Venom is a passive Assassination talent in row 5: using Shank increases your Poison damage by 30% and your chance to apply Poisons by 20% for 6 seconds. In Blizzard's earlier deep dive it was a 25-Energy finisher.
What is Shank?
A new Rogue ability learned at level 24, added on November 2. It costs 5 Energy, has a 10-second cooldown, strikes with your off-hand for 50% weapon damage, generates 15 Energy and cannot miss. Rank 2 at level 44 generates 25 Energy.
Is Subtlety good for leveling in WoW Forever?
It's situational. Subtlety is built around openers, Bleeds and the new Death Mark finisher, and Ghostly Strike lets you Ambush out of Stealth. Kills are slower while questing than with Combat, but it's strong when you pick your fights.
Do Rogues need daggers in WoW Forever?
Only for Mutilate. Combat and Subtlety support all weapon types, and Rogues can now use one-handed axes. Hack and Slash in Combat replaces the old per-weapon specializations.
