The Hall of Thanes is WoW Forever's first new dungeon. It is a five-player instance for levels 13–18, hidden in Old Ironforge beneath the High Seat. In Blizzard's dungeon overview, it is the carefully tended resting place of the dwarven monarchs. Intruders, suspected to be Dark Iron dwarves, have broken in, and ghostly whispers still echo through the halls.

This guide covers the entrance for both factions, all five quests and the chain that starts the main one, the four bosses, the dangerous trash and the loot. Quest and boss details come from Wowhead's Hall of Thanes guide and its launch walkthrough, both checked on 4 November 2026. Some quest data on Wowhead conflicts with other entries, and we point that out where it happens.

How to get to the Hall of Thanes

Alliance

The entrance is inside your capital. Walk into the High Seat in Ironforge, take the open door to Old Ironforge immediately on your left and follow the path all the way down to the dungeon portal. If the group wipes, the spirit healer is just outside the city, so the run back is short.

Horde

Blizzard's access note is blunt: Horde groups "will need to brave the journey into Alliance territory". Wowhead found no shortcut. The route runs from Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad through Arathi Highlands, Wetlands and Loch Modan into Dun Morogh, then through Ironforge itself. Expect to die to city guards more than once. Wowhead suggests taking gear off before you get close so it does not lose durability.

For most Horde players, the Ruins of Lordaeron (15–20) above the Undercity fills the same level slot and is far easier to reach.

Hall of Thanes quests

Wowhead's guide lists five quests. All are Alliance-only except An Ancient Grudge and Important Heirlooms.

QuestLevelStartsObjective
Important Heirlooms14Thom Filch, Old IronforgeCollect 8 Dwarven Heirlooms in the dungeon
The Restless Dead15Afadra Dunwall, Old IronforgeKill 15 Enraged Apparitions and 10 Tormented Souls
Old Ironforge Incursion15Earthseer Farsen, Gol'Bolar Quarry, Dun MoroghLoot Durgen Dirgehammer's Head
An Ancient Grudge14Ghostly Attendant, Anvilmar's Rest (inside)Defeat Faldrim Anvilmar
The Treaty of Understanding16An item in a vault in the Reliquary of Kings (final room)Deliver the treaty

Tips for each quest:

  • Important Heirlooms. Heirlooms start dropping after the first boss. You do not need to fight over them: Wowhead says the vaults in the final room, the Reliquary of Kings, hold enough for all five players.
  • The Restless Dead. The Enraged Apparitions and Tormented Souls are in the first three rooms, so you finish it on the way in.
  • Old Ironforge Incursion is the main quest and has the best rewards. According to Wowhead's walkthrough, its chain begins with A Visitor to Dun Morogh from Beldin Steelgrill at Steelgrill's Depot. That leads to the Dark Iron dwarves who drop a Dark Iron Map, which starts Underground Map, the prerequisite. Start the chain while you quest in Dun Morogh so it is ready when the group forms.
  • The Treaty of Understanding starts from an item in one of the final-room vaults, so loot the vaults before you leave.

A note on the data: Wowhead's quick-reference table gives the same coordinates for Afadra Dunwall in Old Ironforge and Earthseer Farsen in Dun Morogh. At least one of them is wrong, so we leave coordinates out. Wowhead also spells the quarry "Gol'Golar". The Dun Morogh location is Gol'Bolar Quarry.

Trash worth respecting

The opening rooms are gentle. The trash only gets serious on the Dark Iron side.

  • Dark Iron Looters attack quickly with daggers. Pulling several at once drains the tank fast, so kill looters first.
  • Dark Iron Engineers throw bombs at a marked spot. The damage is fully avoidable if you move.
  • Dark Iron Summoners cast Fireball and summon a Fiery Assistant. Break line of sight behind a pillar or wall so they run to you.
  • Lesser Stone Golems hit hard and move faster than you expect. Pull one at a time and focus them down one by one rather than splitting damage.
  • The final pack is a Summoner, a Looter and a Lesser Stone Golem. Wowhead suggests using crowd control such as Polymorph so only two are active at the start. Kill the golem first, then the looter, and use stuns like Hammer of Justice.

Bosses

1. Faldrim Anvilmar (undead)

Faldrim patrols the centre of Anvilmar's Rest. The fight itself is tank-and-spank, and the danger is pulling him into trash. Clear one side of the room, wait for his patrol to come to you, then pull.

  • Mind Blast on the group.
  • Anvilmar's Curse, a 10-minute curse on the tank. Remove it if anyone can decurse.

Killing him completes An Ancient Grudge.

2. Magmatus (elemental)

Magmatus comes with a Dark Iron Summoner. The tank pulls the boss away from the group while everyone else kills the Summoner, because Magmatus periodically pulses a Fire Nova-like burst around himself. He also casts Combust on a random player. Healers should watch for it.

3. Plunder (elemental)

Plunder patrols his hallway and has one ability, Knock Away. The knockback is big, so fight with the tank's back against a wall or corner, where nobody can be thrown into another pack.

4. Durgen Dirgehammer (final boss)

Durgen stands with two Lesser Stone Golems, and Dark Iron Looters line the edges of the room.

  • First, clear the looters around the edge, but not the golems. Wowhead's walkthrough says the golems pull the boss.
  • Durgen casts an area Fear and Rend. Kill the golems one by one with stuns, then the boss.
  • Wowhead adds a useful detail: a golem you kill does not respawn if you wipe afterwards. If a wipe is coming, burn one golem down to make the next attempt easier.

Durgen drops his head for Old Ironforge Incursion.

Is the Hall of Thanes worth running while leveling?

For Alliance players around 14–18, yes. You get five quests (two finish on the way in), a strong set of rewards and a short run back after wipes. Wowhead's beta reports noted that dungeon quest experience was nerfed in one build and dungeon experience was buffed in a later one, so experience per hour may differ from what beta players saw. Our WoW Forever leveling guide covers how dungeons fit into the 10–20 bracket.

Dungeons also feed the Legacy System: one Legacy challenge asks you to defeat the final boss of every dungeon in the 15–25 band. Blizzard has not listed which dungeons are in that band, so we cannot yet confirm whether the 13–18 Hall of Thanes counts. Our Legacy Points guide explains the challenges.
