Is RestedXP Allowed in WoW Forever? Blizzard's Rules and Ban Reports
What Blizzard's addon policy says, the WoW Forever forum debate, China's paid-addon crackdown and whether anyone was banned for RestedXP (2 Nov 2026).
EnlargeAs of 2 November 2026, Blizzard has not said anything publicly about RestedXP in WoW Forever, and we found no confirmed report of a player banned for using it. RestedXP is a free addon that runs inside the game's normal addon system; what you pay for is the guide content it loads. Whether that model fits Blizzard's addon policy, which says addons must be free of charge, is debated on Blizzard's own forums. Blizzard has not answered there. We can't promise it will never act, and neither can anyone else; this page lays out what is known and what isn't.
How we checked: on 2 November 2026 we read Blizzard's UI Add-On Development Policy, the WoW Forever forum threads about paid addons, NetEase's 24 September 2026 notice for Chinese realms, RestedXP's terms, and searched forums and Reddit for ban reports. This is not legal advice and we have no inside knowledge of Blizzard's plans.
Disclosure: we are a RestedXP affiliate and earn a commission on purchases through our link. That is a reason to read this page carefully; we have tried to present the arguments on both sides.

What Blizzard's addon policy says
Blizzard's UI Add-On Development Policy, first published in 2009 and reposted on its forums, sets rules for people who make addons. The relevant parts:
- Rule 1: addons "must be free of charge". Developers may not create "premium" versions or charge for services related to the addon.
- Rule 2: addon code must be visible, not obfuscated.
- Rule 4: no in-game advertising.
- Rule 7: addons must follow the Terms of Use.
The policy also says how it is enforced: Blizzard contacts the developer directly. It does not talk about banning players for using an addon.
How RestedXP fits, and why people disagree
RestedXP's addon (RestedXP Guide) is free on CurseForge, and its code is public on GitHub. Its routes for levels 1–20 are free. What RestedXP sells is the paid guide content: route files you import into the addon with a code tied to your account. RestedXP's terms call this content "licensed, not sold", for one Battle.net account.
The case that it is allowed: the addon itself is free and its code is visible. The paid part is guide text, the same kind of content as a printed or website leveling guide, which people have sold since 2004. Paid guide services such as RestedXP and Zygor have operated for years in Classic and Retail without public action from Blizzard.
The case that it isn't: rule 1 bans "premium" versions and charging for services related to an addon. Critics argue that a free addon whose useful routes are paid is a premium version in practice.
Only Blizzard can settle this, and it has not. RestedXP's terms state that RestedXP is not affiliated with Blizzard, so RestedXP's own view is not an official answer either.
The WoW Forever forum debate
Paid addons became a talking point during the WoW Forever beta. The most active thread on Blizzard's US forums, "Why are these paid addons (RestedXP, etc) being allowed despite being against TOS?", opened on 21 October 2026 and had more than 20 replies when we checked, with no reply from Blizzard. Similar threads exist in the US Forever discussion forum and on the EU forums.
The replies split the same way as above: some posters read the policy as a clear ban, others point out that the addon is free and only the guide content costs money. Forum posts by players are not Blizzard rulings.
NetEase's paid-addon crackdown in China
On 24 September 2026, NetEase, which runs WoW in mainland China, announced a crackdown on paid addons and related commercial behavior on Chinese realms, including paid WeakAuras and paid configuration sharing, with possible legal follow-up. Wowhead reported it the next day.
Two things matter for WoW Forever players elsewhere:
- The notice applies to Chinese realms, run by NetEase, not to Blizzard's realms in the US, Europe or elsewhere.
- It does not name RestedXP. It is aimed at addon developers and sellers.
It does show that the free-of-charge rule can be enforced. Blizzard has not announced anything similar for its own realms.
Has anyone been banned for using RestedXP?
We searched Blizzard's forums, Reddit and community sites on 2 November 2026. We found no confirmed report of a player banned for using RestedXP, in WoW Forever or in earlier versions.
The closest we found was a 2023 Hardcore forum post in which a player speculated that RestedXP caused a ban; other replies pointed to different software, and nothing confirmed RestedXP as the cause. Players in a July 2026 Reddit discussion described RestedXP as not bannable. None of this is a guarantee.
Everything RestedXP does runs through the game's own addon interface, like Questie or Leatrix Plus. It is not a separate program that reads or controls the game client. That distinction matters because Blizzard's terms target third-party programs that automate play.
What could change, and how to protect yourself
- Blizzard could rule on paid guide content at any time. We cannot predict what it would decide or how it would affect buyers.
- RestedXP's refund policy is strict. Its terms say refunds are generally not offered. If the policy question worries you, stick to the free 1–20 routes until you are comfortable.
- Only use official files. Install RestedXP Guide from CurseForge or GitHub. Cracked or shared copies of paid guides break RestedXP's terms and can carry malware; see is RestedXP free?
- Don't add automation outside the game. Programs that press keys or move your character for you are what Blizzard's terms forbid, and they are a far bigger risk than any guide addon.
If you would rather avoid paid guides altogether, the free routes in our best leveling addon comparison are an option. For RestedXP itself, see our RestedXP review.
We will update this page if Blizzard comments or a ban is confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Is RestedXP allowed in WoW Forever?
Blizzard has not said publicly. The addon is free and runs in the normal addon system; the paid part is guide content. Players debate whether that fits Blizzard's addon policy, and Blizzard has not answered as of 2 November 2026.
Can you get banned for using RestedXP?
We found no confirmed case of a player banned for using RestedXP as of 2 November 2026. Blizzard's addon policy is enforced against developers, but no one can guarantee how Blizzard will act in future.
Is RestedXP against Blizzard's terms of service?
That is disputed. Blizzard's addon policy says addons must be free and bans premium versions. RestedXP's addon is free and only its guide content is paid. Blizzard has not ruled on that model publicly.
Did China ban RestedXP?
No. NetEase's September 2026 notice cracks down on paid addons and paid configurations on Chinese realms. It does not name RestedXP and does not apply to Blizzard's realms elsewhere.
Are paid addons allowed in WoW?
Blizzard's policy says addons must be free of charge and bans premium versions. Selling guide content for a free addon is a grey area that Blizzard has not addressed publicly.
Is Zygor allowed in WoW Forever?
Zygor sells its guides by subscription for use in its addon. Blizzard has not ruled publicly on that model either. We did not research Zygor ban reports for this page.
Is RestedXP automation a bot?
No. Auto accept and turn-in run through the game's addon interface, like Questie or Leatrix Plus. RestedXP does not move your character or press keys for you.
