Fire Mage leveling in WoW Forever rests on two new tools: Heating Up, Forever's take on Hot Streak, and Frostfire Bolt, a level 40 spell that counts as both Fire and Frost. Blizzard designed Frostfire Bolt to open "many new Mage talent builds" that mix the two trees (Mage and Shaman deep dive). Below are Fire's talents as of the November 2 notes, how a Frostfire hybrid works, and when Fire beats the Frost default from our Mage leveling guide.

Fire or Frost for leveling?

Our verdictGood, best for confident players or groupsBest default (also Wowhead's pick)

Wowhead's Forever leveling guide uses Frost, and so do we for most players. Fire gets attractive later: once you have Frostfire Bolt at 40 you get a slow on your main nuke, which covers Fire's biggest weakness. Dual Specialization also unlocks at 40 (talents and dual spec).

Frostfire Bolt, the spell that changes Fire

From the deep dive:

  • Learned at level 40, 3-second cast.
  • Counts as both Fire and Frost, so most talents for either school also improve it. Improved Fireball (renamed Accelerant on 2 November) shortens its cast.
  • Deals large upfront damage like Fireball, then applies a damage-over-time and a movement slow.
  • Uses the higher of your Fire or Frost spell damage and the lower of the target's Fire or Frost resistance.

Blizzard's own hybrid example: take Ignite and Ice Shards, and Frostfire Bolt crits for 200% damage, then Ignite adds 40% of that, 280% in total on a crit.

One catch from the 15 October notes: the redesigned Fire Power talent does not count Frostfire Bolt as a Fire effect that stacks its bonus, though Frostfire Bolt still benefits from the bonus.

Fire talents at launch

TalentWhat it does in ForeverLast change
Incineration+crit on Fire Blast, Scorch, Ice Lance and Arcane Blast; up to 5 points for 10%2 Nov
Improved Fire BlastShorter Fire Blast cooldown and +8/15 yards range; moved to row 315 Oct, 2 Nov
Accelerant (was Improved Fireball)Shorter cast on Fireball, Frostfire Bolt and Arcane Wrath2 Nov
IgniteIts own debuff per Mage; no damage lost when crits land close together; now applies past Flamestrike's first hitDeep dive, 2 Nov
Critical MassBack to 3 points for 6% crit (briefly 5 points for 10%)2 Nov
Fire Power3 points: 1/2/3% Fire damage per Fire effect on the target, up to 12%15 Oct
Improved ScorchFire Vulnerability now benefits only the casting MageDeep dive
Heating Up (row 4, needs Pyroblast)Crits with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast or Scorch: −25% on the next Pyroblast, up to 3 stacks (1.5 s Pyroblast)1 Oct, 15 Oct
Blast WaveNo longer needs PyroblastDeep dive
CombustionBack to 3 charges1 Oct

Two details matter for leveling: Heating Up gains a charge on every Fire Blast cast, so a Fire Blast crit adds two, and it isn't used up if Presence of Mind made the Pyroblast instant (15 October). And since 2 November, Ice Lance and Fire Blast share an 8-second cooldown, so a hybrid build uses one or the other each cycle.

A Fire leveling plan

Blizzard publishes no build, and the beta ended at 30, so treat this as a plan, not a tested spec:

  1. Levels 10–20: Incineration and Improved Fire Blast for crits and finishing range. Kill with Fireball, finish with Fire Blast.
  2. Levels 20–30: Ignite, Critical Mass and Fire Power. Reach Pyroblast and Blast Wave for pulls of two or three.
  3. Levels 30–40: Heating Up. Open with Pyroblast, chain Fireball and Fire Blast crits into a fast Pyroblast.
  4. From level 40: add Frostfire Bolt as your main nuke for its slow, and consider the Ignite + Ice Shards hybrid with points in Frost. Take Precision (2/4/6% hit with all spells since 2 November) if you go into Frost.

Safety tips: Fire has no roots of its own, so keep Frost Nova and Blink for escapes and don't kite large packs: Blizzard shortened Cone of Cold to stop mass kiting. For grouped AoE spots, see our Mage AoE leveling guide.

Don't forget Comprehension

Every Mage in Forever gets Comprehension, a new minor tradeskill to decipher scrolls dropped by creatures (deep dive). The scrolls give various benefits and can't be cast while moving since 1 October. Our Forever Mage overview covers it.

What isn't confirmed yet

  • How Fire and Frostfire perform from 40 to 60. Nobody has played Frostfire Bolt publicly.
  • Exact Frostfire Bolt damage numbers; Blizzard gave the design, not values.

Where RestedXP fits

A Fire Mage dies when a quest path drags it into extra mobs. RestedXP's Forever routes plan the path through each hub, with 1–35 available now and 35–60 after launch. Read the RestedXP review and get 10% off with our discount code page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fire Mage good for leveling in WoW Forever?

Yes, if you accept less safety than Frost. Heating Up makes Pyroblast a 1.5-second cast after three crits, and from level 40 Frostfire Bolt lets Fire talents pay off on a spell that also slows. Frost remains the safer default because of its slows and roots.

What is Heating Up in WoW Forever?

Forever's version of Hot Streak. Non-periodic crits with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch each cut your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, stacking 3 times to a 1.5-second Pyroblast. Since October 15 every Fire Blast cast adds a charge, so a Fire Blast crit adds two.

How does Frostfire Bolt work in WoW Forever?

It's a new 3-second spell learned at level 40 that counts as both Fire and Frost. It deals Fireball-like upfront damage plus a damage-over-time and slow debuff, uses the higher of your Fire or Frost spell damage and the lower of the target's two resistances.

What is the best Frostfire build in WoW Forever?

Blizzard's own example pairs Ignite with Ice Shards: Frostfire Bolt crits for 200% and Ignite adds another 40% of that, 280% in total. Blizzard hasn't published a full build, and nobody has tested one past level 30.

Do Fire Blast and Ice Lance share a cooldown?

Yes. Since November 2, Ice Lance has an 8-second cooldown shared with Fire Blast, so a hybrid Mage picks one per cooldown.
